My pup is 14mths, didnt have much to shout about this season as he only caught about a dozen or so rabbits over a few trips out with the ferrets and hasnt even seen a hare yet, we will carry on mooching about the countryside during the sumner, not actively seeking game but if something edible sticks its head up its fair game.. I know his siblings are showing great potential but im in no hurry for him to do the same, hes still got more growing to do and the game will still be there in september

Is that you in your avatar? :)

:) Sounds like your bringing on your pup nice and steady, good luck with him.

 hes here for life, plenty of folk in their enthusiasm start pups too early, im putting everything i have into him in the hope he will fill my freezer for many years to come, took a long while for us to figure out how to get along as im not really a saluki person but we are getting there.

It is mate. Folk treat dogs on here like mobile phones, got to get the latest model. It's pretty sad, it takes years to create a proper hunting team, its not something you can buy.

I quite agree with you Wilf, when you say: I think there is a big difference between someone who keeps buying and selling dogs and someone who is genuinely trying to improve their stock or get to a pl

All you read on here is pups for next season, pups this pups that. Do these pups ever grow into dogs? What happened to last seasons pups, did they make the grade? Is every saluki owner putting his fai

No matter how long youve been into the dogs,Having a pup on always gets you a bit excited hoping this is the "dog of a lifetime".

Watching it grow getting the bond, training, putting up with the chewing whining pissing. All the time looking forward to the windy night when you first take it out, feeling the pups heart beat through the string as you walk it to its first rabbit.

Ican see why lads want to put up a pic of there pup,Gets a bit tedious when a lad cannot even take hes pup a walk without putting up 20 photos though.

I like fuji's photos,15 minutes of looking at them makes me feel like i've had a good walk, shame about my own dogs, they go no further than the back garden now :laugh:

I have only ever had one dog that was bought in ready made. All my other dogs have been pups. Circumstances dictated many years ago that I had to get rid of two dogs out of the three I had. Spaniel, had from a pup and working to a good standard. A 6 year old collie cross taking 20 rabbits a night regular bought as a two year old, and a ACD x 12 months old, had from 8 weeks old, still green and had a lot to learn but the potential was there.

I gave away the spaniel and the collie x. The Spaniel was hard to part with and it really hurt, the collie x did not have the same effect on me when I gave her up. Even though I had had her 4 years and she had done well for me, the bond for me was just not there.

For me personally, i think that my dogs, who give me absolute dedication, total loyalty and are prepared to risk all for me deserve nothing less back. My dogs are for life and if I have to wait for another dog then so be it, the needs of the dogs I have outweigh my need for more dogs. Then again I am one of those sentimantal types :)
