Smk Xs78 Or Ags Pcr 1?

Hi, I currently own a Crossman 2100 classic, and to be honest it is doing my nut in, the constant pumping for minimal FtLb is pointless, so I am looking at the SMK XS78 and the AGS PCR1.

 

The XS 78, I can get from my local gun shop for £105 - £110, and I am not really bothered by CO2 losing pressure in cold conditions, because I am not a morning / cold person

 

But the PCR1 is getting me a bit confused, I have read lots of reviews about it and for what I need (something cheap but fairly ok) it seems alright, however the reviews I read said they buy it new for £175 - £200, however the only ones I can find are used for £275 ish. If I can get it for £175-£200 then I will seriously consider it but used for £275 I'd much rather stick with the XS78 or go the whole hog and get a Air Arms S200.

 

Can anybody tell me where I can get one for the price people are saying they do? And any advice / tips on the two would be grateful.

Can I just add my input mate? My local gunshop offered me an smk xs19 2 years ago when I started out, like you I wanted something cheap because I was on a serious budget, my friend brough a magnum 500 c02 , 6 months of trying to shoot the thing and I still couldn t hit a barn door at 20 yards a year went by and I got it tuned by wood field and hats off it made it better but now I'm only ever taking shots with it out to about 25 yards and more often than not it doesn't come out. In fact it hasn't since I went pcp. I found a local Gunclub and the owner helped me get a set up, I took the hit and got an s200 and I have never looked back, I'm gutted the local gunshop sold me with his petty stories of how good the smk lot were. I just wish I had done something and taken the hit earlier. If u spend the money now you won't need to in the future. I will not purchase another air rifle because I don't need one. My advice. Squeeze as much of a budget as you can, I put mine all on my credit card and its the best thing I have ever done.

 

C02 I would not recommend for hunting, my friend spends 15 minutes a day zeroing his before every shoot purely because of the change in temp day by day, sometimes he can't even zero and just packs up.

 

Go second hand if you have to, but in 6 months time you will turn round and go, that knob on hunting life was right you know,

lol, thanks for that Craig, and I do understand the complications with co2, it can be pretty annoying. Is it worth converting a co2 to PCP? I was looking around and it can be done for around £50. Is it worth it or is it just better off going straight for PCP? Some springers are OK but they often 'choing', so the moderator / silencer doesn't do anything.

If I was you I'd forget everything and jut aim your sights at a pcp, what's the point in converting if its a pcp u want, get one built for the purpose, have a look at the BSA ultra , both what people call budget pcps because they are the cheaper, however punch far far above their weight

Save the extra cash and buy a decent secondhand gun rather than chinese junk.

Er there is another way to go! How about going CO2 now and PCP further down the road? How?

 

Buy an XS79, that is right the CO2 powered one, then buy one of these when funding allows...

Best also to have a chrono so you keep it under 12, but there is another way to PCP!

Having tuned a 78 recently I can confirm they can be turned into decent enough rifles when you have finished. You will also be looking at a reseal kit and polishing the trigger. Great fun to muck about with!

Hi, thanks for all your replies and I am definitely taking notice.

I am also looking at things like the Air Arms TX200, I know it is a springer but its a decent make and bought new will last a long time.

I think what I'm after is a accurate with a bit of quality for less than £250, £200 if I can help it. I know that PCP will be more and I can stretch to more but if its possible I would like it to be lower.

The TX will outperform the SMK78/79 no problem (owned both so I know what I am talking about). It also has the advantage of being easy to service, cheap on parts and needing no other source of energy than your arms too!

Listen to Craig and save the extra cash buy go strate to pcp so u don't have to folk out money in the future awould just buy a second hand ultra if ya can get ya hand on a cheap anuff 1 or or but av had a load of air rifles and it would have to be a aa s410 or the BSA ultra multi but av got the BSA ultra se emerald and think about gttin a 410 just as a second gun

Sorry for the late reply but the powers that be have decreed that I cannot get a new air rifle until about mid June after my exams (fair point) but on the other hand that will give me time to increase my budget by selling stuff so what do people suggest other than S200 / PCR 1

I have converted a few co2 rifles such as the 850 magnum/ smk/ .now the rifle are top. I can get a group with my 850 magnum at 45 yards the size of a penny. And the power is 11.6 with bisley

S200 mate, depends how big You are, a lot of people say the s200 and BSA ultra are twins, I have te s200 because I'm about 5 foot 7 and not massively built although I have just left the forces after a career as a royal marine , the s209 in .177 is formidable, pellet on pellet as long as you shoot it with the care it deserves. If you want to know more about it just pm I can't rate it enough
