Houdini Octopus..

Recommended Posts

I remember to this day reading a story in one of the very earliest " Pan Book Of Horror Stories " called something very much like " The Shifting Growth ".

Basically a tale told from the perspective of a surgeon. Some young girl, cross channel swimmer, had developed an acute stomach complaint. X Rays had shown there was something in there. But, surgery failed to find it. This 'growth' kept shifting when they went in for it.

Eventually, this surgeon impulsively stabbed a scalpel through where it was last known to be and then opened her up.

Yep. They found an octopus firmly anchored in her stomach. She'd 'breathed it in' during a training swim.

Of course, they can change through an infinite variety of colours at will and it seems they can learn to use tools. And after they have opened a jam jar, they can fit inside it !!

National Geographic has documented a 600lb octopus escaping through a hole the size of a £2 coin !! :icon_eek:

Truly incredible creatures.

I always wanted one in a tank but was put off when I was told they don't tend to do well in captivity, would probably only live a few months at most..

I remember when I was a kid, my old mans shooting buddy had a marine tank with stuff that you'd normally find in a UK rock pool. I found a very small octopus when shrimping and brought it up to this fella to go in his tank. He was made up with it at first, but when I spoke to him a few months later he told me it had grown like f**k and eaten its way through half the stock in the tank, so it ended up getting chucked back into the fecking sea!

Seen one the other day,Caught a octopus, put it in a tank with a crab in a see through box,With 3 different ways of openings. The wild one hadn't a clue,So they put the same box in with a octopus in the tank next door that knew how to open it,The wild one went straight over watched how,After that it ,would open the box always using the same opening.Clever things.
