driving fields

Recommended Posts

i've noticed over the last few years the massive increase in "land driving" whether in subarus or 4x4's etc, especially this last year or so, i know a lot of lads have took to the fields with car and lamp for obvious reasons, it's something i enjoy probably more than anything, although if i were honest i'd say its a bit lazy but imo its the best way of truly testing a dogs capabilitys simply because of the amount of quarry you can meet in the night due to the mileage that can be covered in short time.

so i was just wondering how many people on here work there dogs from the motor and what motor are you using this season ?

i'll be starting the season off as usual in a 2.0 legacy but if the land gets as wet as it did last year i'll be jumping in the discovery or a fourtrak and i'll be running 2 bull crosses Billy & Alf

I tell you what i have noticed Lucky, and thats the amount of lads that have old Landys now instead of the Subs... :hmm: Also lots of the old lads have spewed it but now a whole new race of 17 and 18 year olds have come up the ranks, running 3 or 4 dogs on anything they can.. Shame really

I'l say one thing for you Lucky....you work your dogs and they are all single handed, and that actually means something.....

Not long now......fields are dropping

i know what you mean mate, theres a bunch of lads not to far from us that won't wait for everything to come down, but for some the cubs are the only quarry there dogs can handle

one thing i have noticed about this sort of lamping is that it soon sorts the good dogs from the bad ones and i have spewed a fair few in the past.... dogs that had good names and dogs that would have probably kept there good names if they were lamped the normal way... walking, squeeking etc.

As you know Lucky il be doing a bit this season with a subaru.....Didnt do much driving last season...but prior to that been using the subaru's for years and was religiously out every friday through out the seasons..the adrenaline is awesome even before the dogs are out of the motor..and you are at the scene instantly to view the spectacle and not just walking over to a carcas ..You dont seem to get as much tackle now a days as we used to but you still get more tackle than you would on foot but like you say thats prob down to the amount of people now in the game!... There is alot of lads that double up on everything "each to their own" but i never have and never will entertain a dog that cant do a fox single handed regular....iv bought dogs in the past for £600 on trail and they have spewed after their first fox!

A genuine "Fox Dog" are hard to come by nowadys...thats why i regret not breeding from certain dogs that we have had in the past!

Had some Fantastic years thanks to the subaru :toast:

Me and FR use my Izuzu Rodeo,...a GREAT truck, although mine does have more than a quarter of a million miles on the clock...might need a new one soon...getting some doors and windows replaced...i got FR driving for me, and he is mint at it know...we dont even have to talk much, none of this "f*****g 'ell, slow down mate"..."Speed up"...or "Watch the dog you twat!"..lol.

We got young Ratkillah coming over for three weeks this fall, so we should get some game on the roof of that little truck of mine!..

I use a Toyota Land Cruiser ute these days and it's spot on. Great off-road and the tray back is spot on for the big dogs. Tried a Ford Courier (called a Ranger in England) and it was total shite. Ok on the flat but try getting up anything steep and it shits itself. I also have a Disco V8 and that's the business too. Easier to use the Cruiser though as it's got a tray so no need for f*****g about with a door.

Kye...have you still got that dodgy old Rodeo? They seem popular for the builders over here. Funny that the Frontera isn't really used much in England. Does anyone use one off road in the UK? How do they go?

Excellent reading here fellas. I've only ever shot with a vehicle and that was driven into fields known to be infested with rabbit, all I had to do was walk alongside and pop away  .

Going to be trying your way in the future though, single handed with a bull cross, my choice of vehicle though is slightly different, a Yamaha Pro Hauler Quad, this is not like the ordinary farm quads, it is longer with a flat-bed back. Lily is only just four months so it'll probably be tail end of next year before we have any real results. I'll be picking your brains until then  and no doubt give you some laughs as we learn.

I'll keep ya posted............Al
