Crow 1
As most of you would have seen my contributions to the Hunting Life can be pretty sporadic. One minute I'm on a fair bit, then you don't see me for months on end. The reasons for this are quite simple; in Winter I try to get out with my dogs and ferrets, whilst in Summer I'm extremely busy running my motorcycle race team. However, this year it appears that my involvement in racing will have a bigger impact on my rabbiting than I anticipated! I don't normally ride that much, preferring to support two other riders and manage the team. However, I do take part in the odd meeting or two, one of which was a meeting at Snetterton in early July. Unfortunately things went 'tits up' as they say and I was left in hospital for 2 weeks with (most notably) an ankle injury. Originally I thought I’d bent the ankle back on itself and the result was a bust each side, but from the injury it appears that is not the case! The injury has been likened to that should you jump off a 4-story roof and land flat on your left foot. The foot has literally been pushed up into the shin bone (tibia) which in turn has sent the ankle joint into several directions. The result was one very floppy foot, a leg that’s 2 inches shorter than the other and pain like I’ve never felt before. You can see how the foot has been pushed upwards (and backwards) and how the bottom of the tibia has been damaged in the following x-ray: This injury was described as ‘the worse it could be whilst keeping the foot’; when I do a job, I do it well! Luckily for me a certain Mr Chirodian is a dab-hand with a grinder, self tapping screws and a darning needle, and he’s pretty much put me back together. Here's the finished result: It’s not perfect by any means, it never was going to be, but at least I now have an ankle joint of sorts. The short term prognosis is that I’ll be on crutches for at least another 9 weeks, after that it’s pretty much play-it-by-ear (or in my case x-ray). Medium term the best I can hope for is limited movement and pain in the ankle. The long term prognosis is that the ankle will eventually fuse – although the operation has probably given me 2 years of movement I might not have had. So that’s what I’ve got to look forward; a permanent disability and never ending pain! Still, it could have been worse as I could have lost the foot – something you may want to think about if you ride a motorbike in trainers! However, what I'm mostly gutted about is not being able to get out this year, and the effect it will have on future years. Working my dogs and ferrets is my number one passion and I'm going to miss it greatly Crow
montague 0
Bloody hell Crow, that's bad news mate. I'm sure you will do your best to get out with the dogs, even if it's a mooch about.
Guest MOLLY
I know things look and feel bad at the present time Crow, but dont give up hope yet. With good friends and will power i am sure you will find a way to keep at it. You will learn to cope with any problems you have, and one day it will be as if you have never known anything else. Anyways, the dogs will still love you with a limp Take care always. MOLL.
