pianoman 3,587
Both calibres are proven beyond question. I'm one of those happy chappies that can hit and clean kill a rabbit through its head at 60+ metre ranges and longer with my sub 12-ft/lb .22 HW77 and over 100 with FAC .22 HW80. I also shoot .177 equally well. If you enjoy what you have and can shoot with proficient accuracy, it doesn't matter as long as you shoot with precision and respect for the painless, humane despatch of the animal your hunting. You quarry is not complaining about your calibre choices! Pianoman 1 Quote Link to post
reaper1064 285
Caliber is a very personal choice. Before changing your kit over try and get a loan of a .177 and see if you get on with it. I've shot both and enjoyed the two different types but .22 edges it for me. Like I say it's all a personal preference but be sure before you make up your mind. Quote Link to post
jandcguns 65
In my experience the smaller calibre means a smaller kill zone. You really have to be bang on, especially difficult if your shots are unsupported. I used 177 for a year but switched back to 22 in January and have had more clean kills already. 177 is used for ft/hft because of its trajectory and with it being smaller its more accurate imo and it gets in the tight gaps without bouncing off stuff Quote Link to post
jandcguns 65
and all this extra knock down power and if you hit it with a 177 and it runs away is a load of crap, ive shot rabbits, rats all vermin really from 10m out to 65m and could go more and every thing has droped stone dead on the spot ive seen 22s have horrbile kills even when hit straight in the head ive seen them drop kick and when you go to collect them they are still alive with a 22 pellet straight through the brain but ive never seen that with a 177 Quote Link to post
mhopton 807
Well I had a look out with my 22 Exocet and was nocking rabbits down at over 50 yards easy, I believe in 177 for feather 22 for furr 1 Quote Link to post

Cliff Ray 185
There would never have been this argument if Whitworth hadn't meddled about and started standardising stuff. Before him you just made a random barrel and made balls to fit it. Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
its all about shot placement really calibre does not matter! 2 Quote Link to post
woodcote1 88
I admit to having no confidence in using 177 after a few runners but it was a fantastic gun. I just get on better with 22 and im pleased for those who get on with 177. Quote Link to post

fry 209
on about runners i had one once head shot put it in the back of me van with 4 or 5 others totally looked dead got half a mile down the road an it starts leaping round the van ! not really with it but just springing about convulsively like some do when you shoot em. made me jump out of me skin ha ha. Craig Fosse 286
I was converted to .177 after a 22 springer, personally it's more of another thing to worry about. I have enough worry trying to shoot straight not to mention trying to figure out the range, what incline angle your at, what cant angle the bipod is on.... I stick with .177 now because its just simpler, for me ...I am however tempted to try .20, more and more are being made and they are said to punch like a .22 and fly like a .177, any opinions?. P.s I'm not even gonna comment on the leg shooting... I just hope it was a typo.. For all our sakes 1 Quote Link to post
Alan Holmes 11
Well thanks for all of the posts so far! In answer to my origional question then it appears more people are moving to .177 over the traditional .22. Just out of curiousty was it front of back leg the 4 rabbits were.shot in?
