Split Paw?

Recommended Posts

probably been asked on this forum a million times (sorry to all those who have seen it all) but my spaniel has split his paw in between his toes and is lame, what is the best way to treat this?

Any particular creams or ointments or just R and R?

Many thanks

Probably one of the worse area`s for a dog to injure it`s self,if you leave it,it may become infected,if you have it stitched the dog will probably pull them out.The main issue is the infection,if don`t want to attend the Vet`s then bath it morning and night with cooled boiled water and salt solution, and before lead exercise spray the wound with an antiseptic spray ( sheep spray ),you can get this with or without the purple dye, this then allows the antiseptic to penetrate and dry without interference from the dog.

BUT if the wound shows the slightest sign of puss or smelliness, get the dog to the Vet for a course of penicillin..

The sheep spray is a must for all working dog men.

Stick in..

Use a fuciderm cream if you can get it, but would advise vets and a buster collar infection by licking is a strong possibility if it happened more than 24 hrs ago they wouldn't stitch it now.

Anti b would prevent infection, it will take a while cuts on pads do and as long as long as it heals right there shouldn't be long term issues, but any deep cut its advisable to seek vets advice some pads don't join well and will leave you a permanantly lame dog.

You can go to kids shops and gets small socks so if you take her out the wound should stay clean

thanks for the replies, have kept it clean and spread some antiseptic cream on it. It's remarkable how quickly it seems to be healing, still a little lame but obviously not as bad as I first thought, a little blood goes a long way, panic over but have got some good advice which I will use in the future, will defo get some antiseptic spray and liked the idea of the kids socks to keep it covered, thanks once again :)
