Gaz_1989 9,539
I'd be interested to see some replies to this mate. You know my views and I think the 3/4 Grey 1/4 Beddy would make the more versatile animal, purely from a size and speed point of view. I will let you know in the next few months how I get on with mine and look forward to hearing how you go on with your bitch. Atb. Gaz. 2 Quote Link to post
Tiny 7 1,694
Mate had one yrs ago first x about 22''. Great little rabbiting dog both day and night ferreting/lamping/mooching. Would kill foxes singlehanded but that was maybe 5/10 a season so never really called a fox dog and wasnt a dog that liked getting bit so wouldnt like too have seen him on fox in any sort of numbers as i honestly think he would of lifted his head IMO. Deer wise he was the best Munty dog iv ever seen woodland/bramble/railway banking he just aways put up a good show. Any eles tho and he'd get straight lined and never did kill/catch any other speices in all his working life. And hare was the same just never had pace and would get straight line and he burned pretty fast also if iam be honest kiiled a few but were early stubble green ones......... As a rabbiting and munty dog he took a bit of beating he really would keep anyones freezer FULL and the gamedealers ... But anything eles he was beaten, And they had the upper hand 2 Quote Link to post

Do you think putting him to a grey or whippet grey would of made for a more versatile animal? Quote Link to post
Tiny 7 1,694
I personally think back too a sharp coursing bitch would of made for decent alrounders BUT i honestly wouldnt of bred from him if he was mine . He only Sired one litter too a Fell/Whippet and he throw a better dog than him self IMO either that or the bitch throw a handy little sort.........? Quote Link to post

So you think the smaller dogs can be limited? I've been following the recent beddy/grey threads as i think its gonna be my next dog. Hoping to get a 3/4 x at around 23-25tts Quote Link to post
Tiny 7 1,694
No not smaller dogs. Iam not a fan of any first x really. And unless your talking longdogs they tend too be a bit one paced for me anyway. I know its sounds like iv talked down of the dog but he was a very useful dog actually, And if you used him too his strenghs like i said you'd be hard pushed too get anything better. But he was limited when your talking alround game and wouldnt buy one in if i was after something other than a rabbiter but thats just me. Quote Link to post
troter58 1,711
i ran both first cross and 3/4 good dogs put plenty stuff to bed in the 70s/80s i found the 3/4 was prone to feet problems to much greyhound but were good grafters the dogs were 24/26 and bitches 22/24 the first crosses different animals run over any thing and not much slower made great lamping dogs and did a job on most things slipped at i now run a 3/4 whippet beddy he as made 22 tts and the drive in this dog is through the roof i like a bit of beddy puts the spark in a runner.atb 3 Quote Link to post

darbo 4,774
The best mooching dog i have seen was a 1st cross beddy from a j.piggin stud beddy to a track grey 1984/85.very good rabbit dog mustard on feather. lacked a gear for consistant daytime hares with law but took plenty hunted up. bang on for ferreting.worked all types of land from arable / pasture/waste land/disused railway embankments etc. very good nose on this dog.a proper moochers dog. maybe not a dog for big numbers but when game was thin on the ground this dog would find it. 1 Quote Link to post
budgie123 163
I have a first cross coming up 10 years old. He has been a fantastic rabbitting dog. Could only catch harvest hares lifted striaght out of seat otherwise he would get striaght lined everytime. I am not into other quarry but litter sister to mine has been an out and out fox dog single handed being used for little else. My mate had one which was bred from George Newcombes Blue this was an out and out fox dog it had the courage of a lion but still retrieved rabbits live to hand 30 a night some times 3 times a week and was trianed to a level of obedience which would put a collie cross to shame. I am told this biddable nature is lost when you breed onto the 2nd cross. Mine has cost me nothing at the vets which is another benefit. My mate has one now coming up 12 months old and it is shaping up to be a cracking ferriting and lamping dog it has developed through this season from a green pup to a dog marking working long nets and catching bolting rabbits. My mate is an excellent dog trianer and agian this dog is very bidable. 1 Quote Link to post
