dogs-n-natives 1,182
Ok, ive got a Nikon 3100, its a decent camera, ut the lens that came with it is pretty short range. I mainly take scenery and wildlife pics, so a good bit of zoom is essential. I think most nikon lens's will fit to this camera, anyone recomend a good lens with long range?Cheers DnN
Cleanspade 3,324
af-s or af-i cpu lenses are the best suited to your camera i think DnN. I had the nikon D3000. and got some distance pics with the tamron 70-300. but to be honest its a catch 22. as to get good clear distance shots i struggled to get enough light. and got camera shake so iv now invested in a new camera and tripod. but my funds wont stretch to a good distance lens so i will have to be patient. and will be interested in any info on this subject.

nige hutchison 617
I use the sigma 150-500mm, it has built in stabalisation and on your camera it will have a reach of around 740mm most of the pics I have posted on this forum have been taken with this lens and a nikon D90

J Darcy 5,871
hallo the lens which is good for your self is a SIGMA 600mm MIRROR LENS with nikon fit this lens is compact with large diameter these can be seen on EBAY under photograph categary IMO....and it's only IMO the mirrors are a BIG waste of money... It all boils down to price, what you can afford to spend, how important is it to get quality images?. I've had the lot of the Sigma's and I'm here to tell you that they are leagues below Canon and Nikon lenses. Facts are, you get what you pay for. that just about sums the whole lens thing up 'cos there sure as hell ain't no short cuts or a cheap way to consistantly getting top class piccys....IMO.....JD
Cleanspade 3,324
what about older lenses.are any worth looking at? also does anyone use the extention rings. darcy your pics tend to speak for themselves as far as i'm concerned. along with quite a few others on here.
Coyotehunter 689
Darcy is bang on the money, i tried the sigma route and was diapointed, i ended up just saving up and buying the best Canon L lenses, that way if your photos are shit youve only yourself to blame
paddybarr 77
This is the lens you want JD is is spot on save your cash and buy the best, i messed around for years and recently bought a Nikon AF-S 70-200F/2.8 ED VR II and am blown away with the results -
Cleanspade 3,324
ive been checking out long range lenses i'll need to settle for close and mid range wildlife for the forseable future or i could breed ALL my plummers and get a belter .
ade33uk 86
This is what im using on my D3100, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-70-300mm-Nikon-Digital-Cameras/dp/B0012X43P2 . its not brilliant and if i had the spare cash I would definitely buy something better . but for what i paid for it and the fact that im not a professional , its good enough . ok starter lens ,
the monkey 339
I use Nikon and have also been down the sigma route...I have now seen the light and will only buy Nikon lenses .buy an older second hand lens if funds are short. I have a 300mm f4 ed lens and that is brilliant...old, heavy and built like a tank but takes fantastic sharp images.
Coyotehunter 689
Good advise from Monkey, all my lens' ive bought used and saved a ton of money, youll pay almost as much for a lesser quality sigma for the same price of a used really good brand name lens
