Ever since I was little I was always told the dog/dogs should see you as part of there pack and as long as you shoew them that you are the boss they won't do nothing to hurt you or the kids infact they will be very pretective of the kids but them again I whould ever leave my kid with the dogs and any body that does leave kids with dogs on there own is stupid

i know lads that have working terriers inside with kids have no problems ever... i have my dogs inside when weathers bad as my kennels are not ideal in wet cold weather never had any problems, before my border lakey died he was inside with young kids all the time had my niece and nephew sticking fingers up his noes the lot he never gave them a second look and he was a absolute animal when working but when id have him inside he was like a house cat. lol my brother has terriers and he has them inside sometimes and same again never a problem

 

growing up we had german shepherds as a toddler i used to sleep in there bed, if a dog knows its place within its human pack it will naturally be submissive towards the humans it classes as part of its pack.

 

but i trust my dogs and i know how they tick if i didnt know the dog i wouldnt trust it as far i could throw it, and my dogs know any kind of aggressive behavior towards my family is a fast result in a serious hiding.

This "trustworthy with kids" stuff amazes me.

If it can't be trusted, then it should be DEAD. No ifs, butts or maybes.

I grew up with terriers, bulls and running dogs, and it didn't matter what the dog was, what it cost, how it was bred, or how old, if the old man had a question about it, it was GONE, and I follow the same line now.

there was 6 kids in my family. we never was without a dog in the house. i have reared another four into there twenties surouded by working dogs. any litters i have had have been reared amongst folk. socialised within a family atmophere. my dogs are well ajusted and my family are also taught to respect the animals. ive nothing against outside dogs but feel they are a more rounded animal if socialised. and i would agree that dogs are dogs and can never be trusted a 100% thats where common sense and good management and education come into it. ive never seen anything that affects working ability and the main worry to concern me is what they can bring home after a day out in the field. flea's ticks etc all the best

i know that any dogs can snap, both my dogs lurcher and terrier are both inside and are fine with my 3 year old daughter, would I leave her unsupervised with the dogs? No, I trust my two dogs completely but still wouldn't leave her alone with them or another dog for that matter, my daughter knows she can play around with the dogs but as soon as the dogs start to get a bit to ruff then she knows them to leave them alone.

i think working dogs should be housed\kennelled outside dogs like routine and this cant be stuck to when housed inside plus serious terriermen hunting men and even gundog men tend to keep a good kennell of dogs so its not pratical kennells only option as for me my misses would take some look at me to come home and find me at the stove with the young lad 6 black dogs and 5 spaniels laying up watching top gear on a sunday evening :laugh:

My dogs live outside all the more reason to make sure they are completely socialised and have a healthy nature so that when they come across strangers or children they behave accordingly and show the correct respect ........
