ok lads and lasses i my daughter a few whippets 1 bitch who is very successfull at racing we use her for hunting and racing very fit bitch .My ? is this how many runs would you give her at the racing ? I myself realy like see the dog run as much as she wants but when you go there all the others just take dogs out run race back in car and by the looks of them and what i here they dont get much free running .I always give the bitch a run in the morning before we go and then as many as possible at the racing aswhen she out hunting god no how many runs she gets usualy out for 4 to 6 hours most people at racing think your mad for wanting to run her all the time

I raced a bitch in the early 90s she broke track records and won bend and straight championships.

People used to slag me over for what they called giving her too much.I would enter her in her weight class and if there was a 10yd dash on she wud go it that as well.Sometimes i wud put her in a no limit or up to 40lb scratch race too.

The trick is to keep them injury free, not to difficult with racing as long as the ground isnt to hard, but coursing is a different ball game, suddenly changing direction causes a lot of stress on feet and joints

So i would say it depends how serious u are about racing.Coursing and racing dont mix very well, racing is explosive and every millisecond counts. If u let your dog chase hares it will by fractions slow it for racing

I've two whippet bitches work, lamp, lure course and race, yea there's a lot of experts mate when at these events, but once you've worked you dog for a couple of seasons you know what she can and can't do, had my two out mooching for about two hours yesterday couple nice runs, nothing caught but keeps them keen, out today at Kelmarsh she won whip straight racing, somebody told me I can't race and course with her, but she was second to her sister in BSFA last year, so just have fun with her mate take her out doing all events as long as she's fit.

Regards Bryan.

Back in the 70s early 80s when i was racing most of the lads that were in the same club as me, with a couple of exceptions had dual purpose dogs, hunting one day racing the next never seemed to do them any harm. There was always a nucleus of smart arses in the whippet racing fraternity that dispensed stupid advice on feeding training ect. Personally i wouldnt risk my dog on chasing a rag these days, far more important things for a dog to do, but each to their own. YIS KIC,

If your Bitch could Answer the Question And She Had To Choose I'd Bet She'd Pick Working/Chasing The real Quarry . . You Do what's Right for You And The Bitch , Good Luck .

I get the distinct impression, from talkin to the 'racing bunch' on here, other forums and in person....

Theyre only interested in how quick their dogs can get from A to B.... free running a lot can result in injury, pulled muscles etc so lead walking and the only time they are let off it on a nice, flat straight track.

Ive seen them grab the dog out the van...race down the track...then back in the van.

No interaction....

For me, why whippet is free running all the time. Shes not a racing dog....

Shes there for me to enjoy...to walk....run and have fun with.

Nothing fun about the inside of a van.

Ive seen you at the racing jimmy, you do what i do...dogs out, interacting....mucking about....

I was out with 5 mates today...couple dogs each.....

Ground wasnt 100% flat, straight and grass wasnt cut...

But the dogs got 15+ runs each and a muck about with eachother....

People should enjoy their dogs for what they are....and not how quick their 225 yard dash is
