tote 854
No need for anti-biotics unless the wound is infected, anti-biotics attack the infection and if there's none there they'll weaken the dogs natural immune system. Doctors have picked up on this and are loathe to prescribe anti-biotics unless they really have to. Vets though see the £££££. Just over three weeks ago my bitch hit a hedge with a wire fence running through it whilst lamping, she ended up with a 4" cut on her gracillis muscle, I cleaned it up with salt water and had her in the porta mag twice daily. Here's the before and after pics, must add the first pic really doesn't do the cut justice as it was triangle shaped. Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
Take skycats advice. I've used it on a few similar cuts and worked a treat. That Manuka honey is magic. It's £10 a jar in supermarkets but £3-£4 at places like Aldi and Lidl. No need for antibiotics as said by some others. Unless it gets infected of course. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Cheers for advice lads that give good advice and pricks that dont have a clue ya retards. just. been and sin my pal gave her a shot of pen and some dry wound powder. Thanks again lads It is generally not a good idea to use wound powder to dry up a largish wound: wound powder is, in my humble opinion, an old fashioned way of drying up small cuts and grazes, but whilst it may soak up any oozing serum (the white blood cells called platelets which rush to the site of a wound to kick start the healing process) it can often be detrimental to healing a larger wound as it dries it up too fast, creates a scab too early, which sometimes causes bacteria to be shut inside the wound: this is why you often get the scab lifting with pus oozing around the edges: infection has set in. A largish, though not large enough to stitch, wound, should be left open as the new tissue starts by granulating at the edges of the wound, and it needs to remain moist to grow new cells, which eventually come together and fill in the wound before growing new skin over the top. This is why stuff like honey and aloe vera are great at creating an anti-bacterial barrier as well as keeping the site moist enough for the new tissue to grow properly. Quote Link to post
