morton 5,368
Hope they do as earthdogs morton but you hear very little of them. Just wondered do these working beddies bay as these dogs were originally bred to kill foxes were they not? My old bitch as just been retired at 9,screamed like a banshee, seldom got bit, bolted more than her share, mainly in rocks, thats been about the norm with the ones ive bred and keep, her grandson here as just had his first season,he likes to get stuck in more, hopefully another seasons education will settle him.Ive seen some of these tales of the fox slaying Beddys and am sure they are based on fact, the lads working them originally would have had little reason to lie, unlike to many modern owners. As with other terrier breeds there will be the ones that will and the ones,i prefer, that bolt. david2363 42
There are very few places you can get a good working Bedlington pup from these days as the breed has been infiltrated and almost hijacked by ratters and puppy peddlers. Be very carefull who you buy from on the Working Bedlington forum - There are a handfull of good honest lads on there who work there dogs - Peacham, Morton, Rory, Mossberg and Corbet and 1 or 2 others but the vast majority of other members think crunching an 8oz rodent is real terrier work. There is also a large amount of pups being sired by a particular stud dog in South Wales who has been proved on more than one occasion to be a cowardly jibber - This fact seems lost on his owner. Most Beddys now are bred from substandard stock,a sad reflection on the lads who see the dollar sign as more important than breeding for honest graft, not to far removed from the Fells and Lakeys perhaps.Finding a genuine litter is a minefield of mis-information and bullshit, see the parents graft and the chancers and rodent chewers melt into the shadows. For every genuine pup bred, many, many, many more are bred and advertised and sold as workers,a genuine shame for the breed, sourcing honest stock is fraught with lies and ego,s.Im the Beddy,s biggest fan and advocate,if i wanted to reccomend a terrier to a lad starting out,id say look for a Lakey or Fell, better chance of not wasting 2 years on a dog only fit for rodents,a real shame as a good Beddy is a better option than both as a busher and fox dog, especially in rocks. If you want a digging dog id definitely look for a Black or Black and Tan. 2 Quote Link to post
david2363 42
But sadly the Working Bedlington forum has been infiltrated and destroyed by the "rodent chewers and chancers" Quote Link to post
