Bone Infection In Toe

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but how do you, or a vet, tell the difference between a fractured toe that has calcified or an infected toe bone....?

 

My dog had a bite to his foot resulting in a puncture wound between his pads. In the morning his foot was like a balloon, but I kept it clean and within a day or two the swelling had all gone down apart from the outside toe. I gave this a few more days and kept the wound clean, but the swelling on the toe stayed, the vet said the small puncture wound had healed well by itself and no need for antibiotics...A few weeks later and the toe bone itself is still slightly bigger than the other toes....

 

Is this likely to be a fracture/s which have calcified? Or a bone infection? Their is some slight movement for the nail but the next joint back feels solid.

 

He appears in no pain what so ever on the lead or in the house....

ive just returned from vets,both outside toes swollen,not fractured acoording to greyhound vet.vet said as the dog runs hes landing on outside toes first putting them under pressure,so ive had a injection that help, after the 2nd it also acts as a pain killer which lasts 6momths.hope it works,only charged me 39 quid today,was in thier 35mins,and 13.50 for other jabs each.not bothered about the cost but it nice to have a vet who understands working dogs,he told me at the reception he will make it his priority to keep the dog working.
