Grey Squirrel Trapping

Recommended Posts

Interested to know what different ways of trapping you guys use and what methods and traps you use to catch the old tree rat, especially in the attics (lofts) and out in the woods.

I use a variety of traps but my favourite has to be the fenn, and no chinese rubbish either. :drink:

I much prefer the Kania in lofts.

One of the great things about Kanias is that they are either not caught, or they are dead. No late night calls to deal with 'rattling' sounds from the loft.

Also a lot easier to set up than a Fenn. My kanias are board mounted with a wooden tunnel. With the Fenns, you have to have a tunnel and set the trap in it whether it's in a loft or not.

Matt, you say that sometimes you don`t catch with the Kania, how often does this happen? and I take it you have modified your kanias on to the boards to your own taste?

I've never had a fail with a Kania, or a foul catch.

I don't modify them in any way, just screw 'em down to the end of a board and add a tunnel. I'll dig a picture out.

You can get nail on BG holders ideal for fences and trees which hold the trap independant from the cubby. This will allow you to put your tunnel of choice over the trap.

Yep, the BMI Bodygrippers are a very versatile trap in the right hands.

The trouble is; I'm a child of the Fenn era, and as much as I like to think of myself as open minded, I still really like chucking the ole Fenns down within a simple three sided wooden tunnel.

Having said that; I did a squirrel job in some forestry a couple of months ago, and set a couple of bodygrippers on some windblow trees and had good results with them. I really need to get a few more and make better use of them.

Have to admit I am a big fan of UK Traps ( not to everyones taste ) they have a good variety of traps and I have not had a problem with them. A good variety also ie; rail traps, bird boxes with fens and all seem to work well.

I have more success with fenns in tunnels ground set for squirrels. But I tend to cage trap more. If I have a loft situation I will try to set a cage in the garden. Preferably on a fence but every job is different. If I have to set a trap in a loft it will more than likely be a fenn.
