Hot Meat 3,109
Skycat I'm sure iv read on an old thread that you also keep airedale lurchers? Can you give an honest comparison on these dogs compared to the airedale lurchers or forgive me if I got it wrong Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
How tractable are they compared to the collie lurcher, do the Picardy x's have a different temprement to them? The one I had was marks line bred beardie grey blade to his Picardy grey bitch tango, the bitch I got was 23in strong as any bull cross but slower than a week in the jail. It caused mayhem when left in the house or kennel and pissed off everybody within half a mile of the house way it's screaming like a banshee but the worst of all it was an evil evil dog killing b*****d @ skycat be interesting to hear how the 1st x shapes up. simononeill93 69
The two shown are good guards round the house, but when we have them out there fine, and have no aggression problems with mine or the rest of the terriers.their prey drive is high and they will go through anything to get what they want. Bosun11 537
As far as pastoral blooded dogs go, these are very interesting. I've been wondering when they'd crop up on here again. I do hope this thred stays informative and 'sane'! Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Skycat I'm sure iv read on an old thread that you also keep airedale lurchers? Can you give an honest comparison on these dogs compared to the airedale lurchers or forgive me if I got it wrong No you're right, but to ask me to compare them would be difficult: I don't gel particularly well with the Picardy temperament: not saying there is anything wrong with it, but it doesn't suit me. It's a bit like asking someone why they prefer tea to coffee or vice versa: just an individual thing. Also, the two Airedale lurcher sisters I have are like chalk and cheese: one if the most driven thing on the planet, and the other is much more laid back. Even their working styles are completely different. One is pure Airedale in her head, whilst the other has much more of the Saluki thing going on, although she is very biddable indeed like her dam. I can't fault the Picardy lurchers' drive and determination; they are canny hunters and never mooch along half asleep like some dogs. Always got their eyes and noses on the lookout for anything that moves or gives off scent. Not afraid of cover either. From the little I've seen of them they are very much one man/woman dogs, but then again, so are my Airedale lurchers. I honestly think that there are many decent lurchers out there that would be similar in the way they hunt and work, regardless of breeding, but both the Airedale lurchers and the Picardies seem mega tough: feet, thick skins, don't feel the cold, whether or not they are smooth or rough coated. In my relatively limited experience with both types I'd say they are good all round workers, though neither first cross could be said to be hare dogs: not enough ground covering legs: even though some Saluki types seem to run in slow motion their length of leg and their gait mean that they can eat up the ground effortlessly: different ball game altogether. Stamina seems good in both, but hey, I can only speak from seeing a couple or three of both types. Hardly a well qualified opinion compared to someone who has had either type for decades. 1 Quote Link to post
