lillylau 0 Posted March 29, 2013 Author Report Share Posted March 29, 2013 I just was looking into my dog chasing the rabbits to flush them out yes if my dog did catch the rabbits then I would be happy with her work. its me that doesnt want to shoot the rabbits. as for the spaniel I know that some spaniels really enjoy this type of work and if the spainel I got did enjoy it then all well if I decided to get one. jack2o 45 Posted March 29, 2013 Report Share Posted March 29, 2013 Bushing with a spaniel and lurcher is fine if youre not that bothered about killing stuff and the dogs would probably enjoy themselves.only you know if youre ready for another dog.i see quite a lot of spaniels and lurchers on my walks these days and when i ask if they work them they all say no and some even keep them on leads cos "they keep bringing rabbits back" and most of the spaniels are overweight.its a shame some of these dogs could be used what theyre bred for maybe if youre not really into hunting another breed might be better for you.hate to see a usefull looking dog with that glint in the eye being wasted as a 'pet' or sometimes even punished for catching rabbits as i saw a lady do once.theres plenty of pet breeds to chose from.no offence to you hope all goes well 2 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Im just curious, you have plainly stated you have no intention of working your lurcher or future spaniel, or no desire to hunt at all, yet you have joined a hunting forum and asked for advise. Back on topic thats why I said you dont need a working dog IMO. be a total waste for the dog and yourself as your not interested in hunting. Im sure it would be nice to buy a sailing boat and it would look grand down the harbour, but aint guna have a fecking clue what Id do with it lol. Now we have guys with lurchers they call there baby, aren't into hunting and want a spaniel to errr f**k knows what. Seriously....... I actively encourage them to do it and I love nothing more than spending a day out with them, mooching about. It's ok to keep them as pets as long as they are kept fit and active. I do not agree with them being kept on the end of a lead and chastised for their prey drive. Not at all. If there is a chance that they will catch it's only right that you are prepared to deal with it - if for nothing than the sake of the prey which should be dispatched quickly and humanely if the dog hasn't done it. If you are not going to at least be aware and prepared for this you shouldn't have one. Sure you can try to avoid it happening but don't take it out on the dogs when it does. And it certainly will. A spaniel makes a great pet - but working stock are a bit manic and they need a lot of stimulation and exercise. There is no point teaching it to bush if you're don't want to hunt. You can have a spaniel and do plenty of other stuff with it, but I wouldn't suggest working lines for that. Just my opinion. Oh and I don't call my lurcher and whippet my babies. They are my dogs. ... but the terrier is my bestest buddy ever and I confess I have about a hundred puke-worthy nicknames for him 5 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
