bazbug 2
Hi all. Been having a good old look about and can't find anywhere that sells a half decent kit. Would like kit with single non metal rod with brushes and jag etc and bore guide. Anyone recommend anywhere? Many thanks. Bazza. Quote Link to post
dadioles 68
I did not purchase a "kit" but separate bits. I am glad to hear that you are looking for a rod rather than a bore snake, in my opinion that is a wise move. Please add a "bore guide" to your list as I consider it to be essential and it will probably be specific to your gun, sometimes hard to find. It replaces the bolt when cleaning and ensures easier entry when pushing your rod into the chamber. Obviously always clean by pushing from chamber end, the same route the bullet takes. Your "non metal" rod will be made of metal but plastic coated. Try "Rimfire Magic" as a supplier, I am sure they will be helpful. Get a big bag of pre-cut patches sized for the .17hmr they are really cheap. Don't bother with a bronze brush, it risks damage, just use a soft brush that looks a bit like sheepskin for swabbing if required. Clean really thoroughly. really thoroughly..... really thoroughly! Use plenty of patches, a fresh one with every pass until spotless (20... 30...?) I usually finish off by passing a patch with a drop of oil on it followed by a dry patch. If I intend to use the gun very soon after cleaning I put a drop of meths on the final patch to leave the barrel clean and free of any oil residue, that way even the first shot after cleaning is accurate. My theory is that the people who have to fire several shots before their gun shoots straight after cleaning either have a slightly damaged (pitted) barrel or a dirty barrel. Spend some time getting it absolutely clean and then look after it well. The rifling inside a .17hmr is very shallow indeed. 1 Quote Link to post

I do use a brush, but I'm not arguing with any of that, sound advice, especially CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN until it is CLEAN, not until it is "nearly" clean, it may take a few minutes longer but it will save you a lot of ammo. PLEDGEY 496
MidwayUK do a bore guide. 'HPS Target Rifles Ltd' have got stuff you didn't know you needed until you went on their site. For cleaning i use 'Wipe Out/Patch Out' and 'Carb Out' with proof positive Jag and brush. I'm sure i got the Jag and brush from HPS but i can't seem to find them on their site, give them a ring, they were very good and fast delivery. Patches i got off of Ebay, bought a shed load for £10 from a bloke in Canada, with delivery. This seems to work well for me. I put the gun away without the MOD fitted. If you tap the MOD you get unspent powder fall out of it. If it's left on this might fall back down the barrel. My MODS an LEI and can't be taken apart for cleaning. I wipe the whole thing down with Napier spray that's got the VP90 in it.Leaves it all nice and shiny :-) Quote Link to post
PLEDGEY 496
I use a bore snake first, that shifts all the really heavy crap. Quote Link to post

slipper 116
just to add, i was told that the bore snake can damage the rifling and crown, so mine is now in the bin, not worth the risk, something to do with the rope, when it gets hot as you pull it through it flattens the rifling and can take the 11 degree angle off the crown. archiekale 427
how many shots before cleaning ?or do you do more cleaning than shooting do you clean the mod as often as the barrel ? Edited March 29, 2013 by archiekale Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
how many shots before cleaning ?or do you do more cleaning than shooting do you clean the mod as often as the barrel ? My Centrefire mods get cleaned every time the rifle is shot, but CF is a little different and they are P8 Mods which are easy to strip and clean. My .22lr mods get Cleaned infrequently, but my WMR and HMR mods get cleaned more often, but not every time. Let me qualify that a little, EVERY time I clean the guns the mods comes off and gets a good bash around to get rid of any lose crud, when everything that is likely to fall out has, job done, proper clean is done as required! Each to their own, some may never clean, others may clean every outing. That works for me, my guns shoot straight so I'm happy! Quote Link to post

"Personally" I'm not a fan of bore snakes on rifles, their origins lie in quickly cleaning and removing corrosive powder residues in shotguns in the field, then do the job properly when you get home. This doesn't transfer to rifles in the same way! Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
I'm sure Norman Clarkes have one piece carbon rods, delrin type bore guides etc. Quote Link to post

Hawkeye. 26
As for boresnake's , you either clean the bore properly or not clean at all till you lose accuracy. Quote Link to post
