BOLIO1 1,078
This reminds me of an article I read years ago written by an American lady whose vet had discovered her saluki had an enlarged heart,,,,double the normal size....and had condemned the dog to a lifetime of medication, never to be allowed a free run off the leader. When the dog was 8 or 9 his owner moved house and got a new vet who was more familiar with salukis. The new vet explained that salukis do indeed have a heart that is naturally up to twice the size of other dogs of similar size. It turns out that the ignorance of the first vet had robbed the dog of his freedom for all that time! 6 Quote Link to post

BOLIO1 1,078
When it was legal the top lurcher coursing competition was the Forley Cup. All the finalists had to win through to compete on the big day. Every single dog that I'm aware of who made the cut was a saluki cross....except for one....the only purebred dog to make it to the final .....and she did so on three occasions....was T Griffiths Shady, a pure saluki! BOLIO1 1,078
What I mean to say is that if any of these exotic crosses were in the same league as the "fen plodders", wouldn't one of them have surfaced then.......or is it just a case of making big claims now that they can't be tested by the same yardstick? CRAZYHORSE 2,647
I have to ask, do all Saluki's just follow the hare like that? Niether dog in each clip ( dont know if it was the same dog) tried to work the hare just follow it. I am asking as I have never owned a dog with any saluki blood, You have to admire their stamina but as for the dog working the hare????? TC I think you should go and buy your self an anorak and note pad, then take up train spotting.both dogs done a job on there hares, if you could not see that your in the wrong game. 1 Quote Link to post

Well, it seems yet another person cannot see what I can. Watch the Captain clip, now that dog is working the hare. Watch how the dog uses the dyke to keep the hare where he wants it, perhaps you have watched it but do not understand what the dog is doing? Although the first two clips the dogs caught the hares and caught them well, it was the attrition of the dogs that caught, not the dogs working the hares, if you cannot see that then perhaps you should take up train spotting? TOMO 26,021
TC,, that captin dog realy was at the top of his game,,, a cut above most coursing types,, he was up there with the greats , a very exciting dog to watch as well,, as he was usually all over them,,, there's a DVD I have where he catches 6 from 6 and makes the hares look very average I had a daughter of his,, but she wasn't in his league ,,, 1 Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
Tomo, That is the only clip I have seen of Captain and you can tell just by watching how the dog works the hare that he is something special. If I am honest most of the coursing clips leave me cold, I find no pleasure in watching dogs follow a hare around a field. But the first time I seen that clip I could not help myself I had to watch it again. To watch that dog working the hare and trying to get the hare into the position he wanted really had my pulse racing. Then when the hare does what he wanted it was jink left, jink right and game over.
