blackgreyhound 206
tiercel.they have got the stamina but i prefer to see a dog with strikeing power they dont have to chase as far or turn as many times.the dogs were defenitley working the hare makeing it turn .most lurchers would have not stayed those kind of distances .i suppose it is all down to the style of running dog one prefers .i think a dog that can double up is far more exciteing to watch but not many are capable of doing that .theres not many turbo powerd dogs around now days .i prefer a dog that follows the hare a a few feet behind and catches it by turning on its turbo like some top greyhounds can do.over the last 43 years i have only seen one that had the build the height and the sheer power to do so .he could get into cruise mode and follow the hare at a distance so as not to turn it then he would turn on the turbo and strike at it .i am going to try and breed another one and with a bit of luck i will be able to show a different kind of hare dog .but as i say they are a very rare type of dog .but you never know the gods may favor me again Quote Link to post
C Hall 552
Blackgreyhound what type of lurchers do you run now? Quote Link to post
blackgreyhound 206
c hall i dont run anything at the moment as my 13 years old severely autistic son has nearly destroyed me mentally and emotionaly speaking.i started in 1970 up to when he was born in 1999.i have had all sorts of crosses dxg cxg gsdxg lab xg +various mixes .i allways go back to gsdxg.in courseing i like a dog that has got the brain to know when to strike at the hare preferably 27 28 at the shoulder 75 to 80lbs a dog that has got a good lenght on his body strong bone a long and low looking dog for its size .that runs low to the ground for its height not leggy medium leg lenght.if the right dog of this type can be found they have tremendous stamina good speed and most importantly physhical power .good dogs on hares allways have great physhical strength .greyhounds have great muscle power but no real stamina.a good hare dog needs height weight speed and muscle power .saluki can run all day but when i watch one i am allways saying under my breath for fecks sake kill the hare .they can catch hares but they do tend to take a long time doing it .i prefer a dog with cut and thrust.the only problem with gsdxg.is that only rarely does one throw right for hares.in the next couple of years i will be breeding some and hopefully i can get a video up on you tube i think a lot of coursers will be shocked into silence and dumbfounded when they see such a dog doubling up on hares Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
Blackgreyhound, I can see what you are saying, but, to my eyes those dogs were not "working" the hare, neither dog was fainting or using their gears, just following at the same pace as the hare. It is effective though as both hares were caught. There was a clip on here a few months back where a white rough coated dog was coursing a hare to see that dog work the hare was a pleasure to watch. I will try and see if I can find it. TC Edited March 28, 2013 by tiercel Quote Link to post
blackgreyhound 206
tiercel .my friend is comeing around tomorrow hopefully with his malamute x greyhound 28 ins 80lbs .if he shows up i will put some pictures up he recently went out with a man courseing in the daylight and the man said oh malxg .i will bet you 50 that my cxg is faster than your malxg .best of five my friends dog is only a 14 months old pup .it caught two out of three the cxg only caught one out of three if they could have found more hares the malxg could easily have caught three out of 5 or possibly 4 out of five .this dog is big 28 at the shoulder weighs at least 80lbs .most so called courseing men would say to heavy to big but this dog has got speed from the greyhound stamina from the malamute but most importantly power from the malamute .i must agree with you that the saluki crosses dont seem to have the gears as they are a bit one paced.but this malxg on a hare is a different story Edited March 28, 2013 by blackgreyhound 1 Quote Link to post

mooney1 120
I have to ask, do all Saluki's just follow the hare like that? Niether dog in each clip ( dont know if it was the same dog) tried to work the hare just follow it. I am asking as I have never owned a dog with any saluki blood, You have to admire their stamina but as for the dog working the hare????? TC are you for real pal both dogs were in total control brilliant clips!!!! 1 Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Experienced dogs like that don't just throw themselves at the hare as soon as they get to within a few feet of it: they've learned that the hare can throw a jink at the last second, leaving the dog in a pile on the ground, which means it has to use extra energy to get back on terms with it again. Also, the distance between dog and hare can look closer on film than it actually is in real life. Both those dogs struck when they knew that they would succeed, and not before. 4 Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
Not a bad dog this one. Watch the last three strides before he picks up the hare. He faints left, then right, then catches the hare. I don't know if it is my computer but watch it on youtube and it is a lot quicker. TC Edited March 28, 2013 by tiercel Quote Link to post
