i have enjoyed reading this post, some really useful information gained,

i have a 13 week old pup here, hope she turns out ok and not a YAPPER, but if she does there's plenty of river to throw her in round here...

just dont be over keen as to letting your dog chase rabbits at an early age, hold it back til at least 10mths old just letting your dog watch the other dogs, then pick a few easy rabbits for it to run

I think giving them easy runs to begin with, not too many and ending on a high is more important than age tbh. Ok, I wouldn't start them at 6 months etc but someone new to the game could easily think as long as they don't run the dog until its a year old, its ready for a days work.

Best advice yet. When entering a pup.Easy runs are a must.A few close hoppers to start with. Will build confidence.

In my opinion,...Lurchers open up for various reasons... It is easy, to categorise the causes, and keep on quoting the obvious,...but, speaking personally,..over the years,.I have run dogs at a very

yapping behind quarry is born out of frustration or exitement imo...to say a dog is no good just because it yaps is a bit silly..one mans meat is another mans poison imo..i'd sooner have a yapper that

PENNYWISE.....   You would give a yapper 'the lead injection'......   but happily keep a dog that...   -Wont listen in the field. -hunts up all the time And -pulls the pudding off the quarry.

I owned a yapper once... That bitch in my avatar to your left. The first and second time I took her out she sang like a bird, boy I was feckin gutted..! Being a youngster and one i'd put a lot of effort into since she was a ball of fluff, I took stock, had a damn good think and re-located my speck, by about 100 mile to give her the best possible chances. The old ground was good but the new one was much better. Her catches were much easier, her rate was much higher and she never had a feckin chance to have a blow till I called quits. She never made a murmur, never did after either.

Point is, I could have wrote her off after those first two outings but I gave her every chance and it paid off.

It don't work for every dog mind, Chalks is dead right, some mutts are born to sing, but make sure you've thought long and hard about the start you've given a pup before making a big decision.

Would I own a yapper? Best way to answer is to say, i'd rather not but as NMF said, i'd rather have a loud one that puts gear away than a silent one that don't..!!

But it will be more capable at 12 months that it woulda been at 6 months??? Plenty do start them at 6 months...

Definately mate, don't want to start them too early. I always started pups on rabbits 9 months and hares 18 months. When I mean start I mean entering f***ing slowly. One rabbit to begin with, ferreted, easy catch. Then again next time out working upto a couple always kept on slip lead, let it watch other dog work the holes leaving the netted rabbits catching the unnetted ones keep progressing slowly then same on the lamp once its mastered a few like this. You've less control on a lamped rabbit. Always end on a high even if its only one rabbit. You get a feel with experience how the nights panning out. Ok with an old dog to slog it out but best calling it a night early with a young dog if the rabbits ain't playing ball. Can be hard if you've travelled a distance and they're lamp shy for some reason but you can always try again, once a dogs ruined, hard to sort.

yep i was only joking about the pup!

my older bitch sometimes lets out a yip, it really dont bother me,

i dont do much lamping, or at least upto now i havn't, i just enjoy watching my dogs work and hunt up together during the day,

i have a border terrier who barks like crazy when shes on something, like yesterday i was out walking the dogs and terrier started barking through cover, then my lurcher got fired up, stood at the right place and ended up with a rabbit, we got two that way,

my pup was with us just watching and having a sniff about and a bit of a play with rabbits,

im in no rush to start her, i think she will get the hang of it up off my other two!

im also spending the time with pup on a one to one with retrieving etc,

tomo i think your pup will turn out a great little bitch, you get to see alot more stuff than i do up here, i think my lurchers a bit lazy because she knows the terrier will find whatevers there and all she needs to do is stand at the right place and she catches it!

would be great to see few pics of how pups coming along, cheers,

I don't know about you being a c**t but you do sound like your 12 years old. Is the schools off already for Easter down there? You say your pals put loads of jackers in the river, is it maybe because they don't have a f*****g clue what they are doing? Personally I wouldn't have a dog that yaps and thankfully I've never had one that does. Never had a dog that's jacked either, funny that. Hopefully I'll get some in the future so I'm as good as your pals......
