Being Able To Shout Your Bitch/dog Out

Recommended Posts

Some really strange comments on this thread..Many many years ago I had a small russell who could be called out about 50% of the time IF I NEEDED HER OUT..I was flat out with the hunt in them days ..Cubbing time if hounds pushed charlie into a drain or whatever this bitch would tell me if a smelly was at home .She would enter and if a smelly was in she would bay twice and come out wagging her tail ..Now this bitch sometimes would amaze some of the lads but she was 110% a good grafting bitch ..If someone said go on to her she would work her heart out and was a superb stayer done many a 6 or 8 hours twice she did 24 hours till we got to her.If it was the first mark of the morning we would lift her and sort the job out later ..But as said some of the lads would shout to her to get on (b*****ds) But 50% of the time I could shout her out..Only a tiny bitch but worked her heart out on any quarry in them days .If left it was a bolt or a dig she had an amazing way of working and if the huntsman wanted to hunt the fox we always used her for a quick bolt ,one of the best Ive had for bolting but if things didnt go as planned this bitch would stick to whatever ..She took plenty of punishment in her time but in my eyes a good solid working bitch..So was she really any good?? There are some oldtimers on here who have seen my old stuff worked and she was highly rated .Again would the digging guys have bred from her ?As you either got a bolt or you dug her to whatever the game ..Was it a fault that IF I needed to get on to the next dig I could stop her in and come back or try and call her off..This little bitch had no fear of anything Over to you

There's some right sh*te being said on this thread by lads that have obviously only ever owned hard digging dogs without a brain, I've owned many types of terrier from the 60's on and there is a use f

this is the most inaccurate post ive read on here in a long time. A man who gets to use his terriers most often are the lads in hunt service digging for packs. If they keep "hard" type terriers they w

Just to throw this into the mix too I all ways felt a bayer was a team player like my old dog new if he kept it bottled up I would eventually get to him and lend a hand so he got to win and have a rag it was a team effort. You could tell as you got closer he would start to mix it more as well.

Compared to some hard nut job that just see's red from word go and wades in just my opinion

Seems ive not put the point across too well ,bit emotional maybe. What im saying is the backbone to any breeding plan that involves digging to your dog needs an influx of hard ,not stupid, blood to maintain good DIGGING BITCHES.What annoys me is the seeming acceptance that a bayer come awayer call out thing is the future .Call me a dinosaur if you want but my conscience is clear .

Nobody is saying it's the future infact most have been talking about dogs from years ago! I would only have pups from digging lines tbh not into bolting types but I do accept that there is and always has been that type out there.

That just throws another question though..If it dont bolt then you have to dig LOL so its now a digging dog..Or do some block up??

If I wanted a dog for bolts only then I wouldn't keep a dog that may need dug out if no bolt I'd have a dog that I knew came away, not that I would ever keep one of these btw, I like digging dogs to test them and on that I'm saying no more

lads im gettin confused reading this topic!what exactly is a bolter type? if ye are talking about dogs that wont stay or are in and out then my opinion of them is they arent earth dogs and are sub standard, maybe suitable to some folk i suppose i dont know. not all dogs that can be called off are like this tho, i know of some dogs they will stay as long as it takes, baying and mixing and can be called out but i wouldnt call them in and out dogs or half hearted, the people that have them wouldnt keep them if they wouldnt stay untill dug to.all terriers that go into a hole are capable of bolting a fox but the ones that come out on there own are def not bolting types in my eyes, they are what i would call ten minute wonders. your fox may well bolt after that but if he doesnt this type of dog wont be able to help you dig charlie and you will be giving him best...... A bolter type is a bad name for a failed earth dog, and from what i can gather from this topic this is what seems to comming accross.... he should be called what he is a non staying terrier.

Do you think it would be a fair statement to say that the 'MAJORITY'of call out dogs wont stay till dug if things aren't going according to plan, albeit there are some that will stay but they would be the exception rather than the norm,by the way this has been the most interesting thread on here in a long time, and its good to hear others veiws

lukey im curious, what is your definition of a bolting terrier? most terrier men have terriers off digging lines that use them to bolt foxes or if they dont want to leave they will stay till dug........... is it one of these you refer to as bolting types??

Link to post

For me if I was only interested in bolting foxes I'd have a shitebag that ain't interesting in engaging with the fox, let them pass and if things ain't going there way come out then back in to try again, not something I've ever been into mind you

the type you are talking about shouldnt be called bolting type then, it doesnt do genuine terriers used for bolting any justice.... terriers used for bolting foxes that would be be in and out like a fiddlers elbow are mainly the ones that are passed from piller to post and very few lads would call them a bolting terrier. any ive come accross are put to sleep as they have failed to make the grade........

forgot to say IN MY OPINION!!!!!

For those that condemned me early on it seems we are closer to being on the same sheet than first thought .My early rantings were aimed at those that think its ok to own work and breed a failed earth dog .Anyone with an interest in digging to a terrier must agree this is the road to ruin .As for looking to the future of these gallant dogs it annoys the crap out of me to think there are those that would publicly steer others away from digging to there dog as the foremost passion and end result and rely on a yappy jacker to satisfy the law or any public image .

The breeding strategy i wrote of is just what works for me and those i dig with but no doubt others have different ideas .As long as it stays until dug to and anything else is labelled shite then im happy .
