There's some right sh*te being said on this thread by lads that have obviously only ever owned hard digging dogs without a brain, I've owned many types of terrier from the 60's on and there is a use f

this is the most inaccurate post ive read on here in a long time. A man who gets to use his terriers most often are the lads in hunt service digging for packs. If they keep "hard" type terriers they w

Not had a look at this thread for along time its got a lot of diffrent views

Just had a look through it myself Bud and you actually asked the question would your terrier be called a spewer if you could and actually can call it of its quarry, imo i would say it spewed if it came away itself without been coaxed out but also if you can call it of its game then its heart really aint in it in the 1st place.

If you can call one out after baying on a fox. Cover the entrances with nets and wait, the fox soon bolts as it doesnt want to be in the earth anymore. The wait could be a few seconds to 30 minutes but it works. Good for bad bankings

have to agree with everything fatman said if you can call a dog out there only half hearted doing there job. its only a matter of time before it starts coming out without been called. i couldnt see myself with my head down the mouth of a burrow calling my dogs name what a load of s##t. pick up a spade and start digging. you put them in there you have to be prepared to dig them out no matter what the dept is or how hard the digging is

i don't think anyones saying breed to get these, just that they are handy in some situations.

I know plenty of men that think the sun shines out their ass and have bred them to try and get these types. To me and any other digging man the are inferior to a stayer. In 99 times out of 100 a fox will bolt at the slightest oppurtunity. if a yorkie or king charles spaniel went to ground and let a couple of yaps out of it most foxes would get out of their sharpish. No couarge or heart is needed to bolt a fox
I know one thing a fox will only bolt if he wants to simples

Bollocks!

Cheers, D.

I've never been able to call a decent terrier off, although there's been a couple of occasions I've wanted to.........

Only the other week, I was told of a hunt terrier that will come off when it hears the sound of the terriermans quad starting up!............which he found handy

i would rather dig one fox with a good honest hard terrier that will stay the distance than bolt 10 with one of these 'call outs'. I agree with everything fatman and collie greyhound have said, its about testing the terriers to the max, not about how many foxes you kill in a season, this is the only way we can maintain the working terrier and as was said before, breeding of these dogs will dilute the 'gameness' out of the dogs and will eventually have nothing left

who said that some of these call outs wont stay till dug, and they aint 'game' lol. What a load of shit.

rob I don't doubt these terriers are very useful and put a lot of game on the bank, but how can it be a stay till dug dog if it comes away when calle?,surely that would make it a stay till dug, unless called out dog,in that case its doing what its doing to please its owner, its the determination I admire most in a terrier, thats the determination to work not please
