Beech Stock Stain

Hello

 

I decided to refinish my beech stock. Everything has gone great. Stripped the factory finish off, sanded down through all the grits, the stock is now lovely and smooth.

 

I got some Liberon water based walnut stain. I applied the stain per instructions, but for some reason the wood is not absorbing the stain, the stock has gone from very pale to a light dirty brown colour.

 

I tried a second coat the next night, and let it dry over night, same thing again wiped off with a damp cloth.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I found I have to upload photos from my iPhone with the photobucket app, think its called snap bucket. Then go on a computer and log in to photo bucket resize the pictures to 640 x 480 and copy their links into the post on here. Then they show up. Hope that makes sense?

I did my Superten stock a while back and it went fine. If your finish is too smooth it may not absorb properly. Try 0000 steel wool to key the surface slightly and try the stain again. For the record...i used the Birchwood Casey kit

The stock was done with 0000 steel wool, but I did notice it was as smooth as glass before I tried to stain it, let it dry over night.

 

Maybe I have over sanded as I was up to 800 grit, but the stock didn't even darken at all.

 

Loads of head scratching going on!!!!!!!!!!!

did you give the tin of stain a good stir or shake before use.try a darker shade of walnut .

Got a darker one to try, but doing the same thing, it dries on the surface then wipes off

You may be using the wrong stuff mate. If its a standard wood stain then it wont be thin enough to absorb into beech which has a very tight grain. If you stain a door or whatever the stain dries on top of the wood and doesn't soak in. I would suggest a proper kit for rifle stocks...the stain is as thin as water so it absorbs well and once you achieve the correct shade you ad anything up to 7-8 coats of oil ;+)

Thank for the advice everyone,

 

Been doing a bit of reading, and seems the stuff to get is oxalis acid which could get it back to how it was before I tried to stain it.

If that doesn't work then I am screwed will try and get some pictures up.
