skylock 0
Dave Ward was mentioned in Alan Mentors audbigrophy as the hardest puncher he ever fought,he was also mention in another such book as a tough fighter and contender.I beleive Dave Ward was world class material but he had it hard enough he was a class boxer. paulsmithy83 567
Travellers are talented and got the discipline to train and change there diet but travellers mature quicker and take on a lot of responsibility at a young age and life gets in the way that's why you see them at amature level and not so much at the pro levelVery true that and Many don't mix out side the culture so that a non starter in it self, I know few very good fighters most go glove free. More out of respect and its more of a test to see what man you are . just my view.

What so they go out of their culture to lay a driveway but not to have a fight ?.........I thought most travelling boys were eager to earn a pound note regardless what it entails,i quite admire that about them actually................so your saying if a lads a promising fighter he wouldnt want to turn pro and make money as its more about " respect " ?.................Sorry i dont buy it.
Wales1234 5,546
Because time wasted training they could be out earning money working already its very difficult to be trusted by travellers you have to earn there respect and its not easy
rob284 1,682
I've followed Marky B's thread "Rough Fight" - terrific fight if anyone hasn't watched it ! - and it got me wondering. I know Tyson Fury is doing well at the moment, and a few fighters have called themselves "Gypsy" this, that or the other over the years. But, since fighting/boxing is an important part of gypsy/traveller culture and some are clearly very good, why don't we see more of these fighters higher up and more successful in the professional ranks ? i know there is probably a good few guys on here who know a bit about this, so I'd be interested to know what anyone thinks. bare knuckle and boxing are 2 different things. redpat1 225
when I was doing my MMA stuff a year or two ago a couple of gypsy lads came in on a day pass as a guest of one of the owners. These two boys both over 6ft and around a trim 12- 13 stone went at each other with neither taking a backward step and refusing to show any pain to the other although we could spot their grimacing from experience. Within 4-5 minutes these lads had almost killed each other we all just stood there gobsmacked as they were running out of steam very quickly but both still trying to take the others head off. In the end one of the instructors separated them and they shook hands still best pals. I wonder if the reason not many traveller lads don't go to the top is because they have to much gypsy pride as in refusing to take a backward step or wanting to train the old fashioned way of the old knuckle fighters and their ancestors even though a modern scientific approach is far superior and is adopted by all the top professional fighters to gain even the smallest advantage. Just my opinion as I recently read Bartley Gorman's "king of the gypsy's" and it seemed to confirm what I had thought since that day.

Earn their respect ......what do you need or want their respect for.
