Guest ilderfryd
Here in Denmark things are very diffenrent. When you walk your ferret, you will be stopped by people on the street asking what kind of animal it is. When you tell it is a ferret half of the people will know what you are talking about (sort of) and the rest have never heard of a ferret before or think it is a wild animal who only wants to place it´s teeth in your flesh. The ferret society is a small community, eventhough some petstores sell ferrets. And that is one of our greatest problems. We have two "breeders" who breed ferrets for money, and sell them to the petstores. Sometimes they are not older than 6 weeks. They get cancer in a young age. (about 3-5 years old) We have big problems with deafness amoung ferrets and these two breeders just go on and on breeding this kind of ferrets. We are a few breeders from Denmark who will now try to make better ferrets. With better healt and with a better childhood. My ferrets wont leave there mother before they are at least 10 weeks old. They will be handed every day and get a lot of love. In Denmark we make pedigrees, so we can see how old the ancestors got and what they died of. It is very importen to us that we know these things. It is the only way we can see if things is starting to get better or if we should stop the line. I breed four different kind of ferrets. 1: My hybrids. The nature has its natural selection. The weekest die and the strongest survieve. Therefor I am convienced that hybrids have a good health. They are not breed to have special colours and so on. They are unspoiled. 2: UK ferrets. I only have one. Miss Wriggley from Scotland. She is also 1/4 hybrid. A lovely little lady. Uk ferrets have a very good reputation when it gets to health. We are more people in Denmark and Norway who would die for some more UK blood. 3: Farm ferrets. The farmers in Denmark have not breed for colour, but only for skin. Eventhough there are something that point to the farm ferrets being a bit healthier than petstore ferrets. 4: Unknown lines. For ferrets with very very good temper. They will need to have some years behind them before they can get a litter. There is almost no hunting in Denmark with ferrets. In old times there was, but no more. Now they are only pet and for some showferrets. Mine are pet, show and breeding ferrets. Most people here have their ferrets indore. I have them both inside and outside. Most do not feed them with other than dryfood. I feed them with both dry and meat. It gets more and more common for people to let there ferrets live outside and feed them with raw and mice. If there is anything your are wondering about feel free to ask. Quote Link to post
ferret15 0
hi you say almost no hunting what are the reasons for this is it law or trend ? Quote Link to post
Guest ilderfryd
You are allowed to hunt with you ferrets. But it dosn´t seem to have any interest for people. Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
If there is anything your are wondering about feel free to ask. Only to say mate that I wish I still had some ferrets. I simply have no use for them here or I would have. And, if I had, quite frankly, I'd have been more than happy to have bred ye a litter or two and sent the buggers over to ye. That aside, one thing; You're obviously striving for better, healthier ferrets? Knock the dry food on the head and ye'll see a marked decrease in ferrets dying of cancer. Just as cancer in Dogs, in uk, has increased exponentially since people started feeding that shit to them. Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
Hi thanks for outlining the problems you have in Denmark, you mention the breeding of ferrets who are predisposed to deafness , is that because of there colouring, ie the predominantly white ferrets, heads especially (not albino) Quote Link to post
Guest ilderfryd
Ditch Shitter: Thank you for your very kind words. We have talked alot about the feeding, and that it could be the problem. Once again it turns out that this is one of the big sinners. When your serve rabbits is that with fur, or do you do something about it first? FerretLove: Your welcome. Yes. I always seems to find it´s way back to white markings. Special headmarkings as panda and blaze. But also other white markings, as at the stomach or throat. The last one can nearly almost hear, but mated with the wrong partner it might give deafness to some of the kids. Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
When your serve rabbits is that with fur, or do you do something about it first? Fur on. Fur, feathers, bones all form an essential part of a healthy diet for ferrets. It's what's known as " Roughage " and helps their digestive systems work as they were designed to do. I don't know how things are in Denmark. But, when I was younger ( Oh, so very much younger!) I regularly visited a man who ran a butchers stall in the local street market. He sold rabbits and displayed them hung around his stall. Only thing not there being their guts which, of course, are removed quickly after death. Anyway, upon a housewife choosing a rabbit, she'd most very often ask that he butcher it for her. Thus he'd chop the head off and skin the body before jointing it. So I used to drop by and pick up the rabbits heads he was throwing away, see? Complete meal for a ferret in a conveniant package. Quote Link to post
FPO 0
Hi there! our girls also get feed on a mix of dry and fresh meat, they love both bunnies go in whole tethered to stop them takeing them to bed!!! by the next day the rabbits have been striped from inside and all that usually remains is the legs and head Quote Link to post
Guest ilderfryd
I can see I have to try to give them a rabbit for dinner. They have almost tasted anything, but rabbit. Denmark is just a strange country. You can not just buy it everywhere and I´m not killing it myself. Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
..... all that usually remains is the legs and head Strange! Feet, yes. I've possibly never known them eat the feet. But leaving the head and legs?! I suspect ye might be offering too much at once there? Quote Link to post
