darren_nash 85
moving to west cork area in a few months would like to know what sort of crosses /hybrids are suited to that area ,or sort of terrain .my wife had her dog poisoned at the end of last year and we are considering buying another lurcher to take with us . she really has her heart set on a david platts deerhound/greyhound . phoned him the other day and he was on about a 9th generation first cross litter thats due soon..? would this type of line breeding be any better than a first cross or 3/4 bred. or 3/8 5/8..? we have a couple of rabbiting dogs and with there being no ban over there would like somthing to take larger game ..would appreciate feedback or has worked luchers in that area of ireland .. Maximus Ferret 2,063
Hi Darren, where abouts in West Cork are you moving to? The terrain varies a lot. I live near Clonakilty in a mainly dairy farming area. I have no trouble finding a few rabbits and can get double figures easily enough in a couple of hours. I don't hunt foxes these days but always see plenty when I'm out lamping. There're fallow deer here and there if you know where to look. As you travel West from here the terrain gets hilly and rougher. 20 or 30 miles West you start to get onto sika areas and the nearer to Kerry that you drive, the more you'll see and occasionally reds too. Poaching with lamp and rifle was endemic here for years but the wildlife rangers are cracking down and it's not unusual for vehicles to be stopped at night these days so poaching's a bit iffy. There're herds of feral goats too. If you like fishing then this is the best bit of Ireland in my opinion. In summer I divide my time between salmon fishing with a rod, and breath hold spearfishing in the sea, catching bass, pollack and occasional flatties. In the far west of the county you can dive for scallops but no-one gives up their scallop spots (or bass spots!) so you have to work it out for yourself. Hope this helps you out. Quote Link to post
