Bootsha 1,306
got a 97 defender 300tdi, had it since 2000, get under it with a grease gun every now and again, all the u j's, spray the underside with black oil a few times a year, service it regular, ticks over like a f****n rolex, and if you need that bit of grunt, foot down, turbo whistles, hang on, pulls a trailer with nearly 2 tonne of firewood on it no bother. I'd sooner sell the house tbh lol.
neil82 1,075
if your handy with spanners then a landie is ok for you, just be prepared to spend lots of time putting right faults that should have been sorted by employing a few decent engineers when they built the thing, if your used to just driving your motor and having a service and test once a year then forget it, loads of people praise them for for reliability and long life but in the real world unless you find something that has been owned by an enthusiast (masochist) who spent money on putting it right they will be a nightmare, also be wary of anything cheap, there usually cheap because the owners had enough and wants rid ASAP, after 20 years on spanners and working in a factory that made parts for them i can only think of 1 vehicle that was worse than them and that was the old dacia duster, the old lada off-roaders offered better value for money (yes i hate landrovers, the new stuff is even worse than the old ones, never has there been a vehicle advertised as a big rough tough off roader been so fragile a piece of shit, egr faults, electric handbrake faults that cost a grand to fix, eat brake pads if used off road, electronic faults, the engine seems to be the best bit)
danw 1,748
Interesting comments, but speaking as some one who uses on defender properly I.e 10k miles off road per year most the time with half a ton of pellet or corn in the back they cant be beat put it on the road regularly though and I wouldnt want it yep you will need to spend time on the spanners but no worse than anyother vehicle thats used properly, before anyone whinges I've had l200, hi lux and landcruser they broke just the same. All that said if you want one for the school run like most the folks on here have then dont get a defender they are hateful on the road and the japs are better show it some proper work though and the landy will show them the way.
J Darcy 5,871
The one we had was plagued with problems of water seeping into the wiring loom. Imagine the shame of being brought back 160 mile up the motorway on the back of an RAC wagon time after time after time.......we never did get to the bottom of that particular problem, but someone pinched it...be thankful for small mercys i suppose. I was gonna say Dan, as work horses, look at the guys who work the land, keepers, farmers, they all have them. I've had a few discoverys, troopers and a nightmare shogun. The discovery was my favourite. Constant 4 wheel drive, pull 2 16.2hh horses no probs. used them for field management, great machines. I think land rover are the only maker who only do 4x4's which speaks volumes. Like everything else you get good and bad. Never had a defender, like the best of both worlds in the discovery

Ahhh I think they do lorries too lol. Isuzu is good, after sale service is good for giving you free recall of parts even if your not first time owner. Don't think you get a trooper anymore but the pickup looks good and some cracking warranty deals and ain't too expensive either.

Born Hunter 17,751
Ah bollocks! I did a quick auto trader search and found nothing but 4x4s. Still, the Isuzus have a good rep. What about Jeep? Do they only make 4x4s?
