I've had my 90 for 3 years now and it has cost me £40 to get through 3 MOT's, never let me down. As far as leaking goes i was always told if you want a land rover that doesn't leak get a soft top. T

got a 97 defender 300tdi, had it since 2000, get under it with a grease gun every now and again, all the u j's, spray the underside with black oil a few times a year, service it regular, ticks over li

Had 4 landies, and have now swore I will never have another.. not worth the hassle. I have went back to Mitsubishi.   Freelanders ! holy f***ing crap, what a pile of shit they are. and There is n

I am no expert mechanic, but my 1989 landrover 110 200tdi has done 190000 miles and is in use every week. it needs stuff done, the rear wiper motor needs replaced (£55 and a few bolts) and it needs a clean. Something is making a funny noise, perhaps a break, and it really needs a service.

I have had it for a decade or two it needs a couple of hundred spent on every mot, normally brakes, tyres or stuff, but is so cheap why worry. It has been a constant while jaguars, a brace of 944's and a perfect but boring honda something, even a spitfire and now a discovery have come and gone. It costs less per year to maintain than the monthly payment than some of my main cars have. However they are not for everyone. They will always have faults and will always need something. They will always limp home, but if you are used to fly by wire cars and cars that a chap fixes with a laptop then stay with these, and dont grudge expensive repairs, however as an example a full exhaust for the landy is about £120 and 9 bolts. The jag was this price for the last 8 inches of each pipe! They dont need jacked up and take 30 minutes to replace.

It has leaked, things have broken and has been everywhere, no car i have ever owned has been so far off road, however if i want to drive to africa tomorrow i will change the oil, pack some spares, inc a haynes manual and off i will go.i would not try this in the month old mini my wife drives! I would however take a head gasket, they go from time to time and you will miss a meal while you change this, it takes an hour or two and costs almost £50

landys are a hobby, not a car, and they are cheap but always have an issue. either get a very expensive truck or a landy. Mine is an H reg, and few other cars last as long without getting kept in a garage and polished every weekend. There are MGB's that are treated as classics that are treated as babys and constantly polished and garaged. My classic landy spends its time up to its arse in mud, heather and gorse!

For comfort I wouldn't get a defender mate, but if your doing a bit of offloading and I don't mean putting along a stubble field then ther ain't really any that will compete but if your going to get one get the td5 don't get the new model it'll be in the garage more than you've drove it, and that's a promise. If it was me with my own dosh I'd be getting a hilux, more comfort more room more reliable, maybe not so good off road but for most people they will be good enough.

Best advert for Hilux/Toyota was Top Gear, what they put the Hilux through and the engine still started.

I had a land cruiser 3 lt and it was the best vehicle I've owned. Like driving in an armchair and it was excellent off road.

I had to sell it as my mileage has more than doubled since I bought it and the missus is expecting again however I will own one again.

Fourtraks are good jeeps.

Have you tried sourcing a 4x4 from Ireland as most can be found in commercial models.

Has any one got any experiance with the ex MoD ones? They seem fairly decent for the price of em, but the only problem is they could have had a bit of hammer i guess.

But they would have been serviced regularly.

Have a disco Td5 series 2 for 9 years, 2000 plate, never have any majot issues bar clutch plate change, only after i got it,

and A gear box issue as some numpty at a garage put 80/90 in as the gear oil...!!!

i service mine every 8 to 10 thousand, never had a bother, so it all depends on how it was looked after,

Freelander i wouldn't touch, they are a minefield of problems with them.

There is an MOD or associated website that sells all the landies and other vehicles.

They also advertise in Landrover Owner magazine.

It's called www.mod-sales.com
