'Hope' our new Border Terrier pup

Recommended Posts

Thats all very well and good mr1 and I do agree with your sentiments, BUT what if you dont have the earth work available for them? Does that mean people shouldnt keep borders as rabbiting or ratting dogs? My personal opinion is that rabbiting and ratting is better than no work at all, and there are plenty of borders that are mollycoddled lapdogs that are primped up for a few shows then back to lying in front of the fire for the rest of the year. I dont doubt that the border would be in a better predicament as a working breed if more people tested them out properly, but some work has surely got to be better than none at all?

Game terriers on a rabbit! Borders are, or where, bred to work fox, Badger and otter, and it is still legal to work fox, try it, singlehanded, let us know how game your borders are, and if no good, shoot them, dont breed from them, good luck

Cheers for that m.r1 - I'll bear your advice in mind!

All our Borders have entered to fox and worked well, apart from the pup who is obviously far too young. We don't get as much fox work as some of the folk on here, but we're honest about it. The dogs are out pretty much everyday mooching about. Does it really matter if we work them on rats and rabbits, as well as fox when the opportunity arises? I'd sooner have them going out most days doing something, rather than having them sat in kennels until the next opportunity of a fox comes along. If we had a dog in kennels that didn't prove itself below ground, then it wouldn't be bred from. I totally agree with that one. :)

It is mainly my other half that is out with them every day, I've got a toddler so am limited on getting out (more often than not she's out too unless we can get a sitter!). But I do go out and get mucked in with the working them when I can, and that includes digging.

We've had this line of borders for 20 odd years, if we weren't happy with them we wouldn't have them. I'm not really bothered what other folk think anymore. They do for us, and they do for the people that have taken pups from us.

Keep hearing the same old bollocks about Borders, good for nothing, want do this, want do that. From experience they are as game as any terriers I know.

I agree totally with Shell better to use the dog for ratting, rabbiting and fox than not use it at all and end up like the Yorkshire Terrier, a lap dog. You earthdog boys are fixated with putting down the BT. :feck:

Again like Shell, don’t give a rat’s arse what anyone else thinks. :signthankspin: RANT OVER !!!!!

Vixen,

Our current Borders all go back to descendants of the Borders Malcs parents had when he was young. He started off primarily with a dog and a bitch, which produced a fantastic bitch, called True. But we never managed to get a litter from her. We managed to stumble on a bitch pup for sale that was very similarly bred to True, bought her, and all our present Borders go back to her. I've sent you a pm as well.

i have never seen a border work so i cant run them down but if one come out from a working tried and tested line of diging dogs i would have one i can see why lads run them down as most of them wont see a f*****g rabbit alone a hole with testing quarry in there most are bred for show and sold for stupid money no doubt there is people out there working them hard and dealing with them the right way if they fail and i respect them lads for that but what really get up my nose is people bigging up nothing more than show dogs saying this and that if they was kept for work not show why do they sell for so much

all you lads out there with proper working terriers keep at it and keep testing them :notworthy:

i've worked Borders undrground for 10 years or so now and the only fault i find is they give the impression they are reluctant to go some times.

Some are fox killers out and out, some are stupid and get hammered and some are sensible and stay out of harms way.

I have yet to see one false mark or not enter ( all i have seen have been from working stock mind )

The good thing about them is they are generally quite in kennels and they're coat hides alot of " action "

Other than that, work what you want to work but be true to the dog, whether it be black, white or any colour in between.

Hi poacher you are right they are people keeping and breeding this breed purely for money and they are the ones that have over a long period of time ruined the breed for there own greed. But there is people out there who are happy with the working ability of certain strains of border which came out of your own land wales these people who own these dogs dont sell pups but give them free to genuine people with a working intrest in the breed,i can understand the comments of those who down the breed because obviously they havnt seen the proper stuff working maybe one day they will then they to will help keep the border alive for the live it should lead and not £

:icon_eek: I nearly choked then, have you been sniffing something matey :hmm:

And who will these terriers be given to free then ? any one who wants one, the whole working terrier populous ?

Read animal farm a few to many times matey haven't you.

Get yourself a magazine, lets say the countrymens weekly or even the EDRD and see how many people have a litter in, given away to working homes only.

I'll save you the time and tell you, none.

The reason................'cos it all cost's money, whether we like it or not.

Am i gonna breed my KC registered Border bitch and give you, Dez, a pup for nothing, i will pay for a mating and register the pups so you can say the pup's a proper worker 'cos it's done as you like. I don't think so shag.

Am i going to pay for it's up keep so you can turn up and say, "it'll be alright it's going to a working home, 'cos i'm Dez and i say so "

I don't think so.

So why should anyone, let alone somebody who, in my case forked out £250, 12 years back for a dog, going to give the likes of you a dog for no reason ?

It's not a profit thing but why should i be out of pocket for somebody else EH ?

The facts are, i have given pup's away to working homes, i have offered Border's, for nothing other than the gaurantee of working homes this year ( the bitch didn't take ) but i read your post and think why should i bother.

No matter what, Borders will be disliked by some person or other, just as i dislike the thick, deep chested, nugget headed, smooth terrier that predominates the working terrier world, the cyberman of the working terrier world, as much use as a hand brake on a canoe.

So there you go Dez, there is one answer, my answer at least, when i know of people who are desereved of a pup they can have one, until then every fecker pays. same as i did.

I take it that bitch borders are much better workers than male borders, as (1)they cost more (2) in adverts people usually put bitch prefered or is their another reason for the bitch to be so popular£££££££££££££££££

I've seen that with many other breeds too, supply and demand, more people want bitches, simple as that.

There's also quite a big demand for borders so it pushes up the price, free market economy, it filters down to everywhere.

If i was selling a litter of pups then i'd want the going rate unless it was to a friend, a good homes more important than cash but who the hell is going to give away pups to people they don't know. The person you give it to may just be a chancer and think well theres nothing to loose with this one for free and i can just sell it on.

Well, my comments certainly ruffled a few feathers, Poacher, well done, couldnt have said it better my self. There is no problem with rabbiting or ratting, I do not rabbit my terriers because I do not want to encourage them to mark rabbit, I love ratting but do not have the opportunity, but again, good for pups but can cause problems around earths located near pheasent pens where rats are numerous.

Shell At lease your honest about your terriers work and not breeding from a none worker, thats what it is all aboout. but again take your time before purchase, see the dogs work and if you are happy, that is all that matters, may be Dez can show you a true working Border, I think his real name is Paul Danials!

In answer to Dez, a breed I know nothing about!

Good luck and try to stay off the medication prescribed for people with Broder syndrome (Iam ok mine is a three quarter cross!)

Dig deep and leave the Border in!

I cant answer for others but in my case the bitch Ive got is much more fiery and keen to work than the dog was at her age (7 months) The dog runs about pissing up every upright object (including my legs or those of visitors if they stand still for long enough  ) and hasnt got the laid back and placid temperament that the bitch has, hence my choice to get a second bitch rather than a dog. Plus I allready have a border cross dog pup so 2 dogs and 2 bitches is a nice round number.

At the end of the day its no ones business what anyone else chooses to spend their money on

Haven't bought a dog in for over 9 years, before we bought that bitch our old stock was home bred. Owt we have in kennels we've bred ourselves. From proven bitches, to proven dogs of the right breeding for us. :D

As for being honest... we've nowt to achieve by lying to people.

Cracking pup, and well done with your breeding, looks to have produced some nice stuff.

I have alot of respect for folk who keep good working dogs alive, and WHEN i get my next Border, there will be stock still available due to yours and others hard work, well done :clapper: :clapper:

This whole bad attitude towards dogs that have a pedigree fecking stinks.
