Didn't mean to start anything concerning borders and working, folks. Just a friend over here has a couple borders he brought back from Eire that are a good size for our earths and do a cracking job from what I've seen. For the earths around here anything that spans much over about 15" - 16" means you spend as much time digging them in as digging them out. Just curious about the size of 'em there, and the two pictured in particular.

Here we go again, slag the Borders off, have you lot got nothing better to do?

Lovely pup Shell, best of luck with her.

dawn.

FUK ALL TO DO WITH SLAGGIN BORDERS IM JUST PUTING OVER A JUSTIFIABLE POINT ABOUT RABBITS AND DIGGING DOGS FOR WHICH SHELL IS TRYING TO TELL US THE DOG IS BRED FOR ,THE LAST THING YOU WANT TO DO IS SPEND 5 HOURS DIGGING TO A DOG THAT HAS A RABBIT IN A STOP END AND I WOULD OF SAID THE SAME IF IT WAS A RUSSEL LAKIE OR PATT

All my youngsters see and chase rabbits when they are out for a walk and if they are really lucky they might catch one :haha: I don't think it does them any harm it has them using there noses. If you have to dig a dog out from an occupied earth and it has gone to a rabbit no amount of keeping it off them as a pup would help, the blood just ain't no good IMO.

OK, Im not in the best mood, I have to go in for spinal surgery on Monday and Im friggin terrifed, but Ill try to explain how it seems. :)

There are hundreds of threads on here, with Lurcher/Terrier puppies, ALL of them bar none, get the "nice pup, best of luck" comments, except if its a Border! Then its a show dog! I think it stands more than a fair chance that a big majority of dogs of ANY breed will not make a top class working dog, but if they satisfy their owners, then what could be better? If you are happy with what you have, then it works for you, right? Its just that every single Border thread always comes down to show dogs, Borders are one of the few breeds that remain largely unaltered from the very early days, we should be proud of that and the fact they havent gone the Labrador, Springer Spaniel route where we have divided breeds, just be pleased for people!

Good luck with the surgery, at least you have a spine to operate on unlike some on here! :haha:

And a valid point about borders not having gbecmoe two seperate breeds under KC registration, however i have seen some bred purely as pets that a bit too big, perhaps the trend has started towards KC and KC - Working lines?

My brother has a Border, and although not an earth dog, i reckon she would be more than capable and at 18months has slayed a fair few rats, she is a nice shape/size and is a top terrier for him, but as i say i have seen some in London Parks that looked about 16-18inches tall

My Border is a game little facker, he don't go to ground but will stand his ground and do what I ask of him, rats, fox and yes he's happy to mark a bury and take a rabbit, I don't think any less of him. Don't give a flying Feck what anyone else thinks of Borders, I like em. :feck:

Steve66 - she goes back to old fashioned Dandyhow lines.

Dog side goes back to Valmyre Magician of Dandyhow, April Fool and April Noddy, some of the older Oxcroft lines, some Riverworth, grandparents are from the Intack kennels.

Bitch side - her mother and grandmother both have Working Certificates, she goes back to some Hollinholme (working strain), Raebrunfoot Royal Mail, and back to the older Dandyhow lines.

shell

best of luck with the pup

Game terriers on a rabbit! Borders are, or where, bred to work fox, Badger and otter, and it is still legal to work fox, try it, singlehanded, let us know how game your borders are, and if no good, shoot them, dont breed from them, good luck
