Very Very Soft Grey

Recommended Posts

What Penny says :-D Lol.

I took on a bitch 12 months ago, not full greyhound but a good chunk of greyhound in there and certainly a high percentage of sight hound.

She was very nervy and distressed and took weeks, probably months to settle down.

They need time and patience. Stick to road walking and bonding and get the dog fit. Start socialising it like you would a puppy and plenty of reassurance. It should come good.

Aye mate it's got depression - get prozac off your vet and that'll sort it out in no time. All the best...

has it been lying in a draughty place could be rheumatism in its neck or a trapped nerve , greyhounds are skitty but an ex track dog will be used to being handled regularly so touching its collar and yelping shows some neck or spinal problem it could also be someting around the throat preventing it eating properly get it to some one clued up about dogs or to one of them money grabbing vets the dog is in pain.

Greyhound pup from a pet to a working home will need time to adjust, Id certainly give it time to settle before starting work and as Skycat says running them when not ready is a recipe for disaster, if in doubt see a vet..

In general its not unusual for a dog to lose condition when moved on, ensure a warm draught free bed, avoid big changes of diet, paulus post give sensible advice on this.

Some dogs are just nervy but if she wasnt at the last place has come about since you had her, has something happened, are you hard on dogs? Some cant take being shouted at etc.

For now Id forget about working it, spend the summer, bonding, training and getting her fit whilst she continues to grow and mature. Then come next autumn she should be ready to be gradually introduced to working

You have a Ferrari not a transit van, put the time and effort in and youll get a good return.

So the dog was a pet, done nothing. Suddenly you start taking it out, running it, its lost loads of weight and doesn't want to move: no prizes for guessing that the dog is sore as hell, in a lot of pain. Greyhounds can be very wimpy, sensitive, but they are like the Ferraris of the dog world. Easy to feck up: like a race horse. Finely tuned, or not tuned at all in your dog's case.

If you get an unfit Greyhound and run it hard it will seize up, pull muscles, damage ligaments, feet, tendons, much more easily than other types of dog. For Christ's sake get the poor thing to a good bone man: no doubt he will find damage that you have caused the dog by running it unfit. Being in pain will also make such a dog depressed, not to mention the stress it is going through by changing homes, and food.

A dog like this needs a long and careful exercise and conditioning programme to reach a state of fitness needed to work hard.

Good sound advice there...as always! you ever thought of writing a book Penny?

you say the bitch is 9 months old ?, why didnt she go onto a racing career? is she earmarked ? if shes been earmarked was she found to be UNSOUND ,or injured as a pup ?

ive never known anybody breed a litter of greys to be pets ,as it costs over a 1000 pounds just to get them to schooling age (13/14 months).

i think you have to ask yourself was the bitch deemed not worthy of persuing a racing career through injury?

:hmm:Whatever the physical,.or mental problem is,..the poor fecker seems to be, lost,.. in a world of fear..

Dogs,.no matter how bright, clever or seemingly sagacious they appear,..cannot reason...

They cannot ask the question, why,.and definitely cannot figure out what it is, that is causing them grief..

That is where a caring, knowledgeable handler comes in,..and in order to sort out difficult dogs, you need to look at the situation from the canines point of view, not a human's...

To do anything else,.. is illogical...

Long and short of it is,...some folk just ain't suited to dealing with awkward jukels,...

i got a full hound a few weeks ago probaly 4 or 5 inanyways went out with her the other day went to put the lead on her she started yelping now i barley touched her caller .i was taking the washer out of the shed yeaterday and i barley tiped of her and she ran past me yelping as if i hit her i asked the missus to put her into the pen just there she got her caller now barley touched her and start whining y is she doing this are all full hounds this soft never had a full 1 .the chap i got her off more less mody coddled her very loving family coaches the lot not saying anyting but i had her out ferreting a few weeks ago grand she started to pick it up chased 1 or 2 now shes lost aload of weight and looks very down and wont move wat could cause this and why is she being such a moan could it b depression any help on this my mate has a 3/14 grey 1/4bull the same age as this and is acting up culd this be the full hound side causing these problems ?

Would say it's not the full hound side causing these problems, not wanting to sound cheeky but the problem could be more human than canine. Going by what you've wrote it sounds like the bitch could be sore, possibly injured herself while out ferreting. First thing I'd have done would be to check her for injuries, if you don't feel competent enough to do that take her to someone who can. All the best with her.
