trialler 5
Does anyone know the legal aspect of self treatment of working dogs injuries and ailments at home without going to the vets? This follows someone I know being raided and after excessive court costs was eventually fined for failing to take a dog mildly affected by fox mange to the vets even though he had treated the dog himself with Aludex etc. Quote Link to post

wirral countryman 2,110
All minor cuts and abrasions are legal to do yourself but major injuries or anything to do with body cavities is breaking the law and must be treated by a vet,WM 1 Quote Link to post

I think its that when farmers dock tails or de horn it is considered necessarry to stop injuries and flystrike etc. But when an injury or problem occurs to a companion animal the owner has a responsibility to seek medical attention to prevent or stop any suffering. leegreen 2,222
What if your a farmer treating his or her own dog? Quote Link to post
Huan72 687
What if your a farmer treating his or her own dog? I think that in that instance it would make no difference and that the rules about seeking treatment for problems and injuries to prevent or stop suffering would apply. Farmer or not we all have the same legal obligations under the animal welfare act. Quote Link to post
LaraCroft 863
I can't see how it would be any different - the dog is still a "pet animal" and not a farm animal - it is the farm animal that can have treatment such as rings, tails etc - not because it is a farmer doing the treatment as such. Tending to small wounds and putting the odd stitch in here and there is fine - anything more than a few stitches, and you need local or general anaesthetic - which needs to be done by a vet. MAIN MAN 277
One of the farmers here gives doses of penisilin to lambs and cattle and docks tails! iv been with him when a lamb new born has had a really bad hernia and has used anaesthetic before stiching it all back in Quote Link to post
paulus 26
dogs are not classed as livestock so are excluded from the self treatment clause of livestock, this is why if you want to order say benzol benzoate for a dog online you carnt without a perscription, however if the same product is for use on a horse, its avialable over the counter at most countrystores and online without perscription. trialler 5
thanks all, for the interesting answers. I prefer to treat my own dogs for most things and don't have much faith in some vets, but just wandered how it would be if it all came on top. It's certainly something to think about 1 Quote Link to post
