gaz 284
Feed a lot of flesh mainly in the through the colder weather but feed a fair bit of dry meal (chudleys) through the hotter weather.I have two jills here (mother and daughter) who are 6 and 7 years old which are first class workers on bunnies and rats and will still be worked this year, also like all my other ferrets they are in peak cond although they tend be a bit heavy on the dried meal but i put this down to the close season as they take the weight off when their back at work.So could someone please explain this phenomenon to me if dried meal is so bad for them !!! sureshot 0
Chudleys is a big part of my ferrets diet apart from Rabbit and Pigeon Quote Link to post

springfield 20
I find the James wellbeloved ferret food is good for keeping weight on them.I have only used this when given some in exchange for looking after someones ferrets. But it is 40%protien and don't think they can use that amount up so gets turned to fat and is alot to go through kidneys.Mine mainly get rabbits/chicken/pigeon that I freeze.Have 2 ferrets at the moment I am looking after while owner is away and have been fed on James wellbeloved and are grotesk with rolls of fat and couldn't do a mornings yet days work.Rabbits keep um lean.Eat rabbit,Smell rabbit out working. Right this might prove controversial on here as ditch shitter is a well respected fella on here,i too enjoy his posts aswell.................but what gives him the final say as to what is the perfect diet for a healthy long-lived ferret ? is it the fact he has degrees and the like on the subject making him some kind of expert in his field ? or is he just the same as me and others on this site who have kept and worked ferrets for many years now taking the ferrets well- being and health first at all times ? This is not by no means a dig at this individual, more towards the people who hang on his every word and take it as gospel, now i exept that feeding a carnavore the way that it will feed left to it own devices will result in a healthy ferret, but all this nonsence about dry feeding will desroy the ferrets health and cancer ect is unproven and any ferret ive seen fed on dry are fit and healthy as long as its not over-fed and its a good option in the hotter weather with flies and the like, cancelling out a risk of the meat turning bad and leading to some unwell or even dead ferrets.Look what im trying to say is this........everybody to their own tried and tested methods Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
having included my post in this i'll assume i'm one who hangs on ditchs evey word, the only one to have a final say on a ferrets diet is the person that owns it but is there any harm in trying to point them in a better direction, wether it's through gentle prodding or plain rudeness, whichever method works imo. as for dry being better in hot weather well thats down to the level of husbandary employed is it not. as to wether dry actually causes cancer and such like well the truth is it there if you look for it,to be honest i've used it in the past but it's been simply down to laziness and thats the only excuse for it really, your're right though gaz each to his own, they're not my ferrets so i'm done on this subject. Simoman 110
wouldnt touch it with a barge pole ! I'm with Ricky, in the past I have kept ferrets on dry mix and thoses ferrets NEVER looked as good as ferrtes reared on meat, i'll never touch dry food again, all my dogs have been on BARF for the last 7/8 years and they aslo look healthier, i'm sure they are healthier and they enjoy it more........
