cjr 1
Hi all. Was talking to rooster the other day and he mentioned he had posted on here so i decided to elaberate on the bitch in the picture her daughter and comment on sheperd crosses in general. I worked with the bitch bella in her old age her original owner had some personal problems forcing him to her and her daughter to an accaintance. I had heard of her previously but when i see her i was not impressed she looked like she couldn't catch vd in a brothel and the things i'd been told were just lurcherman bulls**t.I WAS WRONG.she had been been catching concisionly since she had been bought and toward the end of the season we had decided to go foxing for the morning. Just bella and a young D.T bred coursing dog i running, who had finished his first season on hares a week or two before. The place held a decent number of foxes and the bitch was working up as usual and bell works herself over a small rise we carry on for a couple of hundred yard i turned to my partner and said wheres bell i backtracked to where i'd seen her last and there she was 40 yards away with a fox she'd taken from the seat in some rough grass between two brambles.we carried on and came towards a lorry body in the corner of a field with a earth running under it bella marking strongly but with no terrier we decide to carry on she had another idea and begins to dig.The soil was peaty so she made good progress and after she'd dug her body in the fox decide to bolt the young dog was slipped and quickly caught it the bitch was the just behind and got the sharp end the dog was taken off and she sorted the fox out.number 3 was similar to the first and as she worked her way up another small bank i followed her she pushes him out of a patch of cover and he run to an earth on the river bank she grabbed him by the back leg half in half out of the hole pulled it out and and killed it. We had worked our round most of the place but had one long reed bed to go she found quickly but it wouldn't bolt she ran it full tilt in the reeds me running up the side hoping it would bolt my way.It came out the other side she put one bend in it and picked it up 3 singlehanded and another we would never had got without her not bad for a 9 year dog. Her daughter out of a 3/4 collie greyhound was also a decent animal who i see do some very clever catches one that sticks out was when we were bushing and the terriers were working a rabbit down towards me and moon she walk forward and stood in the gap between the brambles and watched the rabbit until it tried to cross the gap, she leapt forward and lifted him making easy work of a rabbit 99% of dogs would of messed up on. I've known her to lay down in front of rabbits coming toward her and jump up and catch 'um. she wasn't a fussy bitch she nailed a muntjac the same day that had bolted across some very flat ground and it was a long, long way away before it was spotted a moon put on it. Most dogs could have caught it i was just making the point not all clever dogs pick and chose there runs.both mother and daughter took ALL quarry in there time and were much undervalued at the time.two capable, clever and determined bitches. My general thoughts on sheperd crosses are that there faster than you'd think ive seen them 8 length in front on half cross bull greyhounds in front of dogs out of big land boy and side by side several well bred coursing dog malinois greyhounds are no faster or athletic than the gsd x. i,ve had both. there running style is excellent over rough ground and thought cover. They're alway easy dogs to live with quite in kennels etc and good hunters although some will try to hunt on, on the lamp. none i've known have been great retrievers and the last ones i've seen have not been cosistent. there always seems interest in this cross and don't see why they're not bred lurcher to lurcher more. If you've got a good sheperd cross you've got a good lurcher and some of the dogs on this thread look decent animals. ALB 1 Quote Link to post
blackgreyhound 206
cjr .i remember 1973 going courseing with the gypsies with my gsdxg .they said to big to heavy 27 inches 75lbs went into woburn park preban caught 9 cwd in the dark no lamp needed .one had a cxg great on rabitts in the lamp was catching most of the rabitts.said that gsdxg is useless,i said to him we will go courseing in the morning at mentmore we put up a few hares preban his dog led on the run up to the hares but once the hare got into stride the cxg just was not fast enough .the gsd xg made the cxg look very slow on daylight hares .he like some good hare dogs was not made for rabitts but on daylihg hares it was a different story .you are right gsdxg are faster than a lot of lurcher owners think .my friend has a malxg and that is catching daylight .tho a lot of lucher owners on this forum say it canott.as you say looks can be very deceptive.he met two gypsy boys sxg and they said that malxg wont live with ours daylight .afterwards they said i suppose you will bragging to your freinds that your dog beat ours ,he went out daylight with his gamekeeper friend who owns a cxg .he said my cxg will catch more daylight .bet you 50 ok cxg 1 malxg 2 .my mate is looking for a greyhound bitch to put to either a gsd.or a mlalamute .if we put his malamute xgreyhound back to greyhound they will be very very fast but they may lack stamina 1 Quote Link to post

cjr 1
sorry about the spelling in the last post i was goingpersonally to clean it up before sending. To be fair i was only willing to comment on gsd x's because i've seen several half and quarter crosses.I believe theres better crosses for lamping/ hunting rabbits, lamping foxes/small deer and hunting up foxes but a shepherd x put these together maybe the best for a half x.The dogs coming up 27-28 obviously ain't as agile as the bitches. To be clear i was talking about a malinois(belgium shepherd) not malamute personally i don't fancy northern husky or spitz crosses for various reasons but would have thought they'd overheat.Sheperd and other rough coated crosses can.But i haven't seen any so won't comment further.on the bitches mentioned bella the half bred could have and did stand in ANY company foxing. Will try and get hold of some more photo's but known theres not many about. ALB Quote Link to post
