huntingladjohn 14
worst i had to dig for a ferret was about 6 foot on some really horrible rocky ground but lucky for me it was worth the dig had 5 nice rabbits waiting but its a pain having to dig for ferrets on that kind of ground, id much rather dig 15 foot on sandy ground than 2 foot on rocky ground any day if im out for sport i try to keep away from warrens i know are deep with alot of stop ends or are at the base of a old oak or any large tree, too many times have i spent a full day digging for a ferret and there be 1 bunny waiting... but if all else fails and nothing shows in the easier ones or i just want to push my luck i always end up doing the big deep ones lol when out as a service i go all out on every warren on the spot regardless how bad, had some really deep digs to the terriers Quote Link to post
Nigel1 10
I'm going to ask the most stupid question now but I'm new and don't now much but how do you no if a warren is deep lol Quote Link to post
The one 8,468
Dug 7 foot to get a jill out but she was trapped between two dead rabbits and would never of got out on her own then next burrow another seven foot dig . another place another time it seemed every rabbit had to be dug out at four foot a long slow day . the last few week's only had a few digs and the knocker box says four foot its very sandy so when you hit 3 foot you usually find the tunnel Edited March 17, 2013 by The one Quote Link to post
jasperdog 98
dont dig have my hunting mate to do that as he thinks he's better at it then me, and i always agree with him! 2 Quote Link to post
huntingladjohn 14
i found out the hard way which warrens are deep, by seeing the tracker show 10-13 foot and praying lol... touch wood iv never have to dig anything like that for a ferret. but generally sandy ground makes for easy digging so means deep large warrens, and it depends on if the ground your hunting is flat or hilly but also its just lucky of the draw i find that if the warren is under a large single standing tree like an oak they seem to be fairly deep, i have some permission in a large pine planting and even though the digging is hard because of the roots they are never any deeper than 3 foot. archiekale 427
me and a mate have dug 13 ft and a 9ft both sandy ground when snowing old fox and badger earths last year entered ferret picking knock at 13ft then went off the box could not find him anywhere 2 hours later picked up at 13ft same spot as before then reappeared never enterd there again i always look for the large kick out at front of the warrens you will soon find out if there deep Quote Link to post
chrismdd 787
Not very deep round here, but the worst dig was four and half foot of clay in land that had never been cultivated, hard as rock and needed a proper post digger to make an impact.
