ok time to come clean and get everything settled!

first i would like to apologise to all the people who think ive messed them about or pi**ed off at times and upset.

i am trying to be a genuine lurcherman like all of you on here and its obvious im doing it all wrong so and advice on this post is most welcome good or bad.

well basically yous have all seen my dogs on previous posts but will put pics up again to remind yous, what i think my problem is i read all the posts on here and see all the pics and people saying what they did or have done with there dogs and i think why cant mine do that or wont do that and ill now admit i was expecting too much out of them too soon cos at the end of the day there like babies in a certain way and my 4 month old son is really hard work.

basically my new bull grey means the world to me and i dont want anything to spoil that.

he is nearlly 13 weeks old/this sunday and training is coming on ok he is ok on and off lead will lie and sit on command and has retrieved 2 or 3 things but gets too excited when i praise him and he just wants to bite me lol.

i am willing to start again with him and like i said any advice is welcome ie. basic feeding, exercise and training and so on

and as for my permission i have some locally in durham which has just gone totally dead for no aparrent reason and did have some in hexamsire butlost it due to not going up enough.

thanks mick

raw with out a doubt is the best food for any dog ...but i start pups on dried food with a bit of raw and slowly introduce more raw and less dried food as the pup gets older ...this is just how i do it ...by the age of five months its 90% raw and a hand full off good quality biccies ......like i say there are some good folk on here more cluded up on diets ...i hope they jump in and give you some advice .....just take your time with the basic commands and before you know it 12 months will have flown by .. ..it seems like an age at first dieing to get out and get your first catch  .....paitence and time spent on training is the key...

well wilf iam proberly going to get some folk saying iam wrong :D ..but imo its to rich for a young dog and it upsets there stomach and gives them the squirts ....so i think they should be eased into a full raw diet ...this is just my way off thinking .. B) people will say what about the wolf or wild dog pups they dont get biccys :clapper: ..but they do get how the fook do you spell regurgtated  food off there mothers when weeks old and its broken down by the mothers stomach acids so its already taken some of the richness out so to speak .. :D its not just because they cant chew it .... :victory: ..its hard for me to explain my views in writing.. but over a beer i could bore the arse of you talking about it .....what do you think wilf am i talking shite ??:laugh: we all have our own ways i suppose ....i like to think i know a little about bringing a pup on and getting a dog fit ..not everthing but a little ... do this make sense to you .???

Good luck with your pup Mick,...Beta puppy is supposed to be the best dried puppy food available, got all the ingrediants needed for a growing pup!

My Meg' was brought up on it for the first few months.... :)

Feed a puppy a stricktly raw diet and ul end up in bother rickets(calcium deficiency) being one of the main and serious problems, feed a good puppy food like pedigree puppy, beta pup or the likes thats not cheap, and then add meat to it so the pups get what they need and that little extra,i generally boil beef or tripe for pups using the juice to soak the dry in,this puts extra weight on the pup and the dry food provides the rest of the vitamins the pup requires!

other than that let the puppy be a puppy traing too early will sometimes bore or dant a pup even make it nervous at 13 weeks and upwards puppys should be bold boisterous animals not something thats getting scolded because it doesnt sit on command....

just my opinion guys but it works for me!!!

Gotta agree with Garypco :victory: ..sounds like very good advice  ,a good quality biscuit ie:Hills Science Plan Puppy,Eukanuba Puppy,Iams Puppy are expensive but a bag goes a very long way for a puppy and with a bit of meat prefrably raw added to flavour things up he should do great :victory: .Good luck

With pups, i get Red Mills Tracker, add some powerd sheeps milk, some granary bread, mince beef and luke warm water. I then mix it all in and give to pup, they usually gulp it down.

I dont give a huge meal, just a small one, then repeat again at lunch time, afternoon and before bed time in the evening. I do this up till their 4 months, then slowly introduce more meat, small peaces of venison, beef ect and increase it, till the pup is just getting 2 meals a day. Along with this they get lamb breasts, shanks ect, bones for teeth, rabbit, hare, chicken, as they get older and with this, the red mills decreases.

All the best :drink:

i also feed pups a mixture of dry and raw for the same reasons that snoop has already mentioned i use either beta puppy or jameswellbeloved ( i personaly find peddigree to rich and have been advised by a vet friend of mine that its not the best) with raw lamb chicken and veg carrots sweet potato greens etc and a raw egg on top i found the egg helps give a nice shiny coat. and feed him separately from the terrier as you cant know how much hes getting if there sharing a bowl and it could lead to fights if he grows up thinking he has to fight for his food.

i hope this is the start of a happy learning experience and well done for being mature enough to realize where it went wrong :drink:

whatever you decide to feed ,make it little and often,PATIENCE,pups need time ,spend the next eight or nine months training, bonding, and reading your dog, spend as much time as you can,the more you can get a pup out and about the more it will learn, and will be socialised without even trying.dont look to hard at the dog untill its about a year for fitness, then start slow and gradually build it up,its not rocket science but its the little bits you learn after years that make the difference to a dog, read as much as you can,and sieve through it, use your common sense, a dog can be a good reflection of its owner, good or bad. OH dear: the great dog food debate AGAIN!

For what it's worth, my tenpence worth: I used to feed complete, but ONLY a food that was meat based: Purina, Eukanuba etc. If the first ingredient on the ingredients list on the bag is meat then the food is meat based, if the first ingredient listed is a cereal then there is more cereal than meat.

I have now reared my last two pups TOTALLY on raw and the difference I've noticed is that they have NEVER had the shits, only crap small hard stools, have superb coats, amazing teeth and far more energy. BUT, I make sure they get bones, quite a bit of animal fat (around 1/4 of their total food is fat).

Yes, its more time consuming if you feed raw properly as you are doing the vegetable mincing and other bits and pieces. A typical day's food for a tiny pup of less than 3 months would be as follows:

1/2 scrambled egg

a tablespoonful of minced veg.

2 tablespoonfuls of natural plain yoghurt

A tiny pinch of SA37 with each meal

The rest would be made up of as much meat as the pup can eat split into 4 meals: the meat is chicken, beef, lamb and game (rabbit, hare, venison: depending on time of year etc)

I mince chicken wings very finely for tiny pups but by the time they are 3 months old they are chewing on and eating the whole chicken wings bones and all.

OH by the way, I don't mix everything up together: the yoghurt gets given on its own as part of the 'sit' training; off a spoon! But the veg etc is mixed in with the meat.

That's just what I do, but like has already been said: thank God dogs are adaptable: as long as you feed decent quality food and worm regularly they'll grow and survive OK.
