courser 73
I have just ordered a new CZ .22 Hornet American but delivery will be twelve weeks. The guy at the shop says he can get a CZ Lux .22 Hornet in two weeks. Apart from the obivous, Fixed sights, shape of stock, Etc, are there any great differances? (the Lux is eighty pounds cheaper) In either case I would have the barrel cut down to eighteen inches and screw-cut. Is this a good idea? would it make the rifle less accurate? Could someone please advise? Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
If you decided on an American then you want an American. There will be no inherent difference in accuracy of the American or Lux. Certainly a difference in aesthetics and feel! The Lux in particular is quite long, about 23-24 inch I seem to remember, for general day to day work 18-19" is probably fine for most cf. BUT .... what has led you to wanting it cut to 18"? Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
My personal preference is for the American as I think the Lux is quite ugly. I'm sure they are as accurate as each other. Quote Link to post
courser 73
Hi Deker, Thanks for your reply. Having the American cut down to eighteen inches, ( I think I will wait the twelve weeks for it, as you quite rightly said if I want an American, I want an American) Is so I can fit a mod without it being to long to use from a pickup. The Barrel on an American is 22inches as purchased, so perhaps I could cut it to Twenty inches? Or am I thinking about it the wrong way? Again please Advise. By the way,as you may have gathered I am very much a newbe when it comes to rifles, having more experiance with lurchers and Shotguns. Quote Link to post

If length is an issue then over barrel mods can help as well as barrel chops. It is amazing how awkward a rifle/mod can be from a vehicle, even very short barrels, so if the vehicle is a big part of shooting then a shorter barrel will help from that point of view. 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
You will lose quite a bit in velocity, chopping to 18" so I would advise you to reload for it,(as I would with all hornets)if it was me I would not take it down less than 20" and fit an over barrel mod as has been said, the hornet is a great round, enjoy. 1 Quote Link to post
Lewdan 17
Hi Mate. i have a Ruger .22K hornet, barrel is 17" threaded. well under 1" groups @ 100yds, so accuracy no problem. shot many a charlie around 150Yds one or two nearer 200! excellent calibre but you will need to reload to get the best out of it. Good Hunting. LD Quote Link to post
richmcgin 32
Charlie caller is right, if you mess with the length of your barrel you mess with the pressures produced by the ammo, but you may be able to counter act this if you load your own, you can increase preasure by decreasing your load, but you would need to do a good bit of research to get the load right and keep it safe. Yes your accuracy would be effected but as long as the job is done right it would be minimal. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Normally I would say start some loads off with h110,my hornet shot 35 vmax very well at 12.2 gns very close to maximum, but in a shorter barrel I would say start with lil gun,you really cant get enough lil gun in a hornet case to be dangerous,(but obviously work up from starting load)I switched from vmax to Sierra 45gn varminter, apart from the cost(about a tenner cheaper)I found that at long range say over 150yds they shot flatter than the vmax, and made less mess on the odd long range bunny, but deffo invest in the lee case flare die,and factory crimp die, combined they make a world of difference to reloading a hornet, with its flat based bullets,if you need any help with regards to loading for your hornet, feel free to pm me,and I will be happy to help out Quote Link to post
