Good grub - exercise - and rest...simple

Why? Thought i heard it all. All you really do with a running dog is run it. And it will slowly grow into its natural build. Any bigger is excess weight imo.

Funny time in the year to be asking a question like this. Dogs should be winding down now not getting running fit. Anyhow..... As said road work is one of the best ways of getting a dog on its toes et

No there's better people on here to give advice than me! But I don't start slating people cos I haven't got anything constructive to say!

Is your input constructive then? Who slated when they never gave a constructive answer? I just questioned his timing..... Asking how to get a dog running fit at the end of the season strikes me odd and was worth the query, don't you think?

Too much protein in a diet and you end up with a very hard muscled dog but one that has little fat because the energy is used building muscle.

My gundogs were on a high protein diet and they were fit as hell but no fat at all so i changed to a higher carbohydrate diet and they have improved no end.

I think a balanced diet is the answer and feeding to the work load your giving them. I like 28% protein meal, meat and brown bread. Add veg etc but cut the protein and bulk back in the summer if they ain't out much. No point in having a dog bursting with energy and no release.
