KittleRox 2,147
Yes mate but i can't remember what he's split to,some colours mix into others, like the silver x cinny will produce isabel these greenies may produce a different colour but to be honest i like normals so not really bothered if they do or don't,time will tell type thing.Only cocks are ever spilt for anything, hens are not so if you put a split cock over a colour 3/4 aprox will be coloured.Where as a split cock over a normal will produce normal youngsters.I am no expert mate and to be honest thats about all i know and i'm sure bunny's and others know a lot more and can explain it all better.. aye I thought so mate, I kept budgies for a good few years ( not show type, I just bred for colours ) and know a little about genetics, I,m no expert either though, to be honest I like normal coloured birds the most but you do get some cracking mutations, particularly parakeets ( parrot lets, indian ringnecks etc , I also kept penguin zebras for a few years My mates giving up the birds so I,ve got my name on his breeding cages, I,m going to start up again ( don,t tell the wife lol ) but I can,t make my mind up between Javas, canarys, parrot finches, Gouldians, British etc etc etc lol
fireman 10,932
Good to hear mate and go for some natives and a few canary hens, that way you can produce some mules and add a bit of variety to your stock.Plus they have better song than those foreign squawkers and can match those foreign colours any day . fireman 10,932
Redpolls i know are ok in double breeders as i bred some in one last year, linnets i'm not sure about as i haven't kept them but goldies are also fine but if your going to cage breed try to get cage bred bird as they are usually steadier than aviary or flight bred ones and are used to cages to start with.If i put my birds in cages they bounce of the wire and it'd surprise me if they bred in them.I have produced goldie mules in double breeders and greenie mules as well but it was a bigger cage with the greenie mules.i know lads who only have cages and they do ok with breeding different sorts of finches in them . Satenette is the colour my greenie cock is split for and i'll get back to you on what they could produce colour wise.

Thanks for that bud, I think I,ll start with the easier types to start with untill I get some decent flights built so the birds you have suggested sound good, it surprises me you,ve never kept linnets, they are cracking songsters supposedly

fireman 10,932
Over winter there all in together but are now split up in smaller aviares but there still mixed, got goldies in with redpolls myself this year.As for smashed eggs the only nest or eggs i've ever lost was when i went on a family holiday and the mother in law was looking after them for me and i had a redpoll on 5 eggs when i left and a smashed nest a week later when i got back and never found out why and i haven't had any bother since so until i do i'll stick with whats worked for me so far .I wouldn't want to advise you to mix your goldies unless you know what your goldie cock's like as you say there known egg peckers but i'll have a bet if you mix the siskins with your canaires your'll have a mule or two but i don't know about colony breeding of siskins,i know you can with redpolls but haven't read about others doing it with siskins mate sorry. It is a bit of trial and error with every one every year when they have new birds and every one has the same problems so don't feel it's you if it goes wrong,we can advise each other but experience is sadly learnt the hard way mate.

fireman 10,932
I have a thinking that it's a bored bird that causes trouble and keep them with things to do and it'll help keep trouble down,i put bits and pieces of different food about the place so they have to search about for it,a bit of apple here and some chickweed here that sort of thing and i'm sure it helps stop bordom.Any animal if bored will cause problems, either being noisey or descrutive or it'll be just in poor order and won't breed without problems, just my own thoughts on things but like i say mate it seems to work for me so i ain't fixing it just yet.If the mixing don't work you can always try just one pair in with the goldies as so many cocks in condition together could be the tipping point where as 2 with their own hens and nests will have things to do rather than fight anyway, good luck mate and hope it goes well for you . just to add the greenie cock split for satinette x'd with the lutino hens will produce, satinette hens, normal hens and normal cocks split for lutino and satinette.Handy eh Millet?
