Stevie76 2
Hello, I don't suppose anyone has had any success with stripping and re-staining a beech stock darker. I have a bsa ultra, it has a nice stock, but the colour like looks like a fake sun tan. Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post

porkycrook 466
Stevie have you started stripping it already? Let me know how far you have got and i can guide you from there. Quote Link to post
Mawders 595
Yeah you can't beat a nice bit of dark wood! I might buy a second hand stock of some description cheap and practice on it then do my rifle really dark! I'm a stickler for attention to detail! Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
so say its fully sanded down, where would you go from there roger?? what would you use for a dark finish? Quote Link to post
porkycrook 466
Well Scott the first thing that will need to be done is to rub down the stock to at minimum 320 grit all over. Then you need to go all over the stock with a sanding sealer, you have a choice either a spirit, acrylic or shellac. But really you would only go for either the spirit or acrylic, spirit is cellulose based and acrylic is water based. Whichever you choose the procedure is the same. After sanding you then go all over with the sanding sealer, wait for it to dry. This will raise the grain so sand again with the grade of sandpaper as you finished with the first time round. The idea behind using sanding sealer is so that whatever you use afterwards will seep into the grain consistantly. If you want to fill the grain to have a smooth finish to your stock this should be done now. Now you choose the colour stain you want. So you are now ready to stain the thinner the stain the quicker the stain will absorb into the wood, so this is why you use test areas. Stain on and even coverage then you are ready for the finish of your choice. Quote Link to post
Stevie76 2
Hello, No not started stripping yet, I wee bit scared to incase it ends up looking like an year old who spent to much time in benidorm! I should have went for walnut to begin with. I like making something look better so I can stand back and say to myself " I DID THAT " Stevie. Quote Link to post
porkycrook 466
Nitromors and hardwork to take off finish. I used a brass wire brush (which is softer than normal wire brush) to clean out the chequring of finish. Quote Link to post
Mawders 595
That's some good info porky! 1 Quote Link to post
Stevie76 2
Roger, I would be trying to get a nice dark earthy brown. I have read on the tinternet that beech doesn't take a dark stain very well, and seems to end up that orangy/brown which is what I am trying to avoid! Cheers. Stevie. Quote Link to post
sureshot.177 49
My dad took his back with nitromors and it looked that nice he left it at that Quote Link to post
