In my opinion his books were at their best pre-83, apart from one or two but he ran out of things to talk to the common man about after that. Maybe his experiences (or 'borrowed' tales..) had all but ran out or he just liked to fly the intellectual flag.. Either way, for me, he lost his way..! As for him being 'the best', well as we have heard, his husbandry was far from top notch. His breeding too, especially with lurchers, I'm sure Hancock said that in the late 60's an early 70's his breeding experiments with lurchers (various crosses, including bull bloods etc) done more harm to working lurchers than anything else...! And, lets face it, his own line of lurchers came off James Archigo (spelling) a Romany, who had kept the line all his life. Even the Merle dog was bred by Di Fish and all he done was cross the two..! Just a fair question can you suggest a book with your exploits with Plummer? Higgins. Ha ha ha this'll be John H's new account... And for what it's worth I enjoyed Plummer's books. When I was a young laddie growing up Plummer, along with Walsh, Drabble, Sheardown, and some past authors including Lucas, Sparrow, Russell to name one or two provided a varied insight into the hunting and fieldsports world from a historical standpoint. To suggest Plummer was the only worthy author producing books of this sort, as John H seems to allude to, is silly. I enjoyed his work especially Tales of an Artisan Hunter, Rat Hunting Man, Omega, Hunters All, Cottage at the End of the World...and North and North Again and I read them from time to time... The old Shooting News was a cracking read - Lloyd on Lurchers, Daergi, Pesters Pen etc - far cry from those days...in today's publication...I remember when the old Shooting News wouldn't accept any advertisment for bull x whatsoever...changed days - irony in there somewhere I reckon... We're just as well off today if not better off - Darcy, Bluck (Frain???) and others...there's a whole range of modern day books out there written by knowledgeable men and women...had to laugh at John H's assertion that Plummer was a humble man though - made me laugh anyway...
