Getting Rid Or Keeping.

Recommended Posts

It all depends what the dogs are for ... If the dog is your pet then of course it doesn't matter how well it catches ... If you are a seriouse hunter and the dog is missing game after game then sooner or later you have to part ways or find yourself another hobby ... If like me the dogs are a tool of your trade then if they cannot do the task asked of them they have to go ..... As the old saying goes it costs as much to feed a bad dog as a good one so why waste money feeding shit ..............

At the time I needed a pair of dogs to work and earn part of my living and I had limited space......weve got a lurcher that was gifted to us a few years ago from someone off this site..he didn't do anything but rabbit didn't retreve would jack when he'd had enough and didn't catch much..I'd done a few seasons with him and the mother inlaw left the gate open and he got hit by a car..his repair cost the best part of 5k (we ain't wealthy) and he's still plodding about 3 years on...my working dogs have to work and earn my hunting dogs are my hobby.....

Sadly not everyone has the luxury of keepin a shirker. What i mean by luxury is having the room/kennel space. Ive a retired bitch here that earned her place by the fire and she'll live the rest of her natural here. Ive 2 kennels and thats it. Only one is taken at the minute by a half decent bitch that pleases me on occasion so she'll stay. The minute she fcuks up/jacks will be the day she goes to big hunting land in the sky. Limited space means room for decent stock and nothing else. If everyone was honest about "it'll stay if its rubbish" then most of us would be overrun with dogs/failures. To me lurchers are workers first and family pets second and the moment that reverses will be the day i hang me hunting attire up for good . By the sounds of it alot of you must have lurchers coming out of your ears . atb NMF

i had a dog years ago called charlie he looked like a gsd .he was not very fast and did not catch as many rabitts in the lamp as a fast lurcher would he couldnt catch a hare in the lamp let alone daylight .but he was a genuine dog with a good nose and was good at flushing game out of hedges.he was a tryer and never ever gave up.the most he ever caught in the lamp was 34 rabitts he must have chased over a 100 to catch those .he could catch cwd in big open fields when They went and hid in the hedge or ditches.he was kept becuse he was a genuine dog and allways did his best

a gypsy once came to me with this scanky looking greyhound. was missing a leg had one eye and scabby as f*ck. so i asked him "what you going to do with that" he said " im going to race it" i said " i think you'll bloody win"..................thought id lighten the mood. for something that is a hobby/pastime/pest management people take themselves very seriously and seem to find great joy in making themselves sound like they take it more seriously than others or are better at it. some people spend more time on here smashing other peoples opinions than out with their dogs by all accounts. happy hunting

Back in the day,..my hunting life seemed so serious, and I was ultra-critical of a dogs failings..

Nowadays,..I know that my current stock is not top class or earth shattering,.but,.feck it, so what,.. I get by.

I'm with you on that one Chalkie :victory:

Cheers, D.
