have any of you lads and lassies ever had a dog that you were going to get rid of, but thought you would give it another chance and it then turning out to be the right decision as the dog turned out to be a goodun? or maybe even getting rid and then finding out that it was a great dog for someone else?

if your hearts not in your dog you'll always see a wrong in what he does for you get rid and get yourself new dog start over mate lol

A dog comes here pal, its here fer life, i get the best out of em

Perhaps its an age thing,..or me, simply getting soft,...I don't know ?   Truth is,..I now keep dogs,..which a few years ago,..I would definitely not have entertained.... Back in the day,..my hunt

It all depends what the dogs are for ... If the dog is your pet then of course it doesn't matter how well it catches ... If you are a seriouse hunter and the dog is missing game after game then sooner

I have never said my dogs are more than they are - in fact, I am the first to say that some are not that good. I know a good dog, and I know a bad dog, and have had my share of both. I don't pretend they are anything more or less than they are. But don't tell me I am not honest about their ability.

a trevelling man stopped me years ago and said would you be selling me one of those dogs.i said my pups are never sold, thier only given.prove to me that you are genuine and i will let you have one for free.i would rather give a pup to a keen hunting man than sell it to a person who does not deserve to own it.if my dogs were not up to scatch they were very rarely .passed on

well my dog Bryn, in the field does his job, is a very good rabbit dog day+ night, where ever i took him he as never let me down, had very good bags over the years, last bag was 31 rabbits 1 night, and didnt miss much that night, great catch dog fast+ agile brings back his catches. Well thats in the field, but apart from that the dog gets on my nerves, with his manic ways. 1st if you upset him, thats it no hunting, 2nd it as this thing of looking at me (none stop) meaning it will walk 5 yds turn look, 5yds look, 5ydslook,5yds look,5yds look,5yds look,5yds look,5yds look,5yds look,5yds look,5yds look. Yes it gets you PISSED OFF DONT IT . Its been a struggle keeping Bryn for me, the last (3 years) many many times ive wanted to get rid of him, but because of the above iknow he is very good at his job, and its ( only that) keeps him here  i did think about E/collar once , that everytime he turned to look at me give him wack with it . not got that far yet, having Buck my pup as been great as i spend alot of time with him, and not so much time with Bryn , and its done the trick, sad but true

I have 2 dogs here that i doubt most others would keep. Both are good dogs work wise. But they hard to live with and both need handling differently. If i had to get rid id rather put them to sleep as i wouldnt trust anyone else with them. I have an old dog here and aslong as he can jump the back gate to follow the others when they get jogged hes staying here. After years of running all over the uk he deserves it.

Aslong as my dogs give 100% in everything i ask they have a home here. As the saying goes god loves a trier .....

I was training ppd's and wanted a pair of dogs to work myself..My gsd bitch was useless as a pup no drive what sp ever..I spoke to the breeder and agreed to refund me and take the dog back.she was 7 months old and showing no sign of ever being a working dog..I gave it a,few days rang the breeder again and he said yes no problem bring the pup back and he'd sort it out.so off I went to Hampshire to buy another pup it was a 500 mile journey.got home rang the breeder and he said he didn't have the space and wouldn't have het back..I ended up keeping her and continued with her training at 12 months old it was like flicking a switch she is still hear and its the best patrol/protection dog I have ever owned..not a lurched I know but could of been a huge mistake and it was all my fault

Have found a lot of dogs that are fantastic workers!! are hard work off the hunting field!! and most are collie blooded dogs!! my Salxgry is a sound dog well behaved but is more of a pet now has i dont lamp anymore!! but if he see's another dog or people walking will go charging over to them, have tried all-sorts to stop him doing it! if i was honest with my self i should re-home him!! but have had him from 12weeks old and have not got the hart to part with him.

Mine are here to stay - the shit and the amazing alike. They all have good food, a warm bed, and a loving home for life, and an appropriate ending when necessary in their old age.

Exactly! I feel a very strong responsibility with the dogs. I would only breed from those that are up to scratch. But as a dog owner I feel I'm responsible for every dog in my care, worker or pet, good and bad.

It all depends what the dogs are for ... If the dog is your pet then of course it doesn't matter how well it catches ... If you are a seriouse hunter and the dog is missing game after game then sooner or later you have to part ways or find yourself another hobby ... If like me the dogs are a tool of your trade then if they cannot do the task asked of them they have to go ..... As the old saying goes it costs as much to feed a bad dog as a good one so why waste money feeding shit ..............

:hmm:Perhaps its an age thing,..or me, simply getting soft,...I don't know ?

Truth is,..I now keep dogs,..which a few years ago,..I would definitely not have entertained.... :whistling:

Back in the day,..my hunting life seemed so serious, and I was ultra-critical of a dogs failings..

Nowadays,..I know that my current stock is not top class or earth shattering,.but,.feck it, so what,.. I get by.

I think it is a very debatable subject alot of u are saying u would never get rid of a dog but I say there is certain dogs that are better of rehoming depending on what u were expecting of a dog and this is all preban of course what it can do ie buying a fox dog and the dog not living up to it or wanting a dog as a all rounder as a dog that can do every thing deer fox hare rabbit beating working over the gun or ferreting personally this is a big thing that had been going threw my mind for the last 3 years from a litter that I took two dogs and wanting 2 all rounder types this has not happened over these 3 years I have found 1 dog that is perfect in he's job this dog could do all them things preban of course and the other brought up the exact same way could not achieve the same standard a lot could say that it is down too the person training I agree this is right but sometimes this is a debatable that some dogs need different training methods in time too mature before enterd on certain quarry is all the right thinking u must know ur own dog in thinking that this dog that never made my standard was not enterd too any thing apart from rabbits and retrieving shot hares in its first season and things that bite back in its second season and not having any of it both dogs enterd in the exact same way with an older dog that's doing its job so I think folk have too reason why u have a dog or 2 dogs is it too have a back up for the right reason if a dog needs rest or injured or are u needing a certain type of dog for certain type of work so as some folk say my garbage might be another mans golden ticket so yes I would get rid of a dog that does not live up too my expectations but I would make sure the dog would go too a good home and the person told the true story of what the dog can do and what it can't do cos u have too think are u going too feed this dog that can't do the jobs u want for the next 10 too 14 years that it will live ie difference between a pet and a working dog u don't see a sheep farmer keeping a collie that can't work sheep do you
