Thought you might be. What did you pick? (other than a bitch). And did you see the sire?

 

The bitch I picked was black and white,.... Quite light framed, the lightest of the two ( I only had the choice of two bitches)

I've looked around for a decent collie lurcher litter for nearly two years and then one pops up within a few miles from me :-)

Apart from the big red dog I think the whole litter was pretty even, good luck with her mate I'll look forward to hearing her progress.

i bought my first "Hancock dog" off David 20 odd years ago, she was a "real un". ille remember that little first cross bitch till the day i die, for all the right reasons.she would be one of my top 3 ive ever owned, ive had two others off him aswell both 3/4 border 1/4 greyhound both good uns. and both took most quarry good style well before the ban.

more lately ive been after other quarry on different land, and consequently have needed a different, type of dog, although if i got back into rabbits day and night and wanted a dog for it i would be down hancocks, and give him my money and take another border collie x greyhound straight away, personaly i found him a nice bloke, and dont think 250 is a bad price for a pup, especially compared to some of the prices of the top coursing type bred pups of today.

 

some of my "few" dog mates i have, have had dogs off him too, and they have all done well with theres too, but i rate them all as" good dog men"

 

my opinion is based on my own experiences and ownership, over 40 years of keeping lurchers not internet hearsay or from "a mate of mines friend"

 

however i think he sells so many pups to just anyone who comes along, that there is bound to be a large amount of duffers about, though i reckon in the right hands his dogs should have as good a chance as most other pups that are for sale,

for what its worth, here are my thoughts on hancocks dogs.

 

i have seen many dogs bred by the man from various studs, and have to say that i have yet to see a bad one. some were only average but there were no shockers amongst them. one bitch bred from mr jones (border/beardie first cross) was the best all-round dog i have ever seen. lamp ferret, daytime hares with 50 yards law (not in saluki class but still very good) deer including fallow (dog only weighed about 50pounds!) foxes for fun, retrieve shot birds from water just a superb little dog but i have to say her owner is a fantastic dog man. i have no doubt that some rubbish appears in his litters, but that's true for every litter.

 

there seem to be several classes of people who advise against hancocks,

firstly those with a moral objection to a man who breeds dogs for a living, and that is a fair opinion but thats all it is a question of personal morals. its ok to breed sheep or horses or cattle or pigs or little animals to sell at PETSATHOME for cash but not dogs?

 

secondly those who cant or wont put up with the quirks of collie bred dogs, and to be honest these folk would be better off with a point and slip anyway, they are obviously not suited to collie types whetehr from hancock or someone else

 

thirdly those who object to dogs bred from non workers. well if those dogs are producing decent dogs it obviously doesnt matter if they worked themselves does it? and if they are not producing the goods, people will stop buying pups bred that way. if you are buying any genuine first cross then the chances are that neither parent has actually worked the quarry that the pup will work. how many greyhounds are tested at rabbiting? or collies? or bedlingtons? etc

 

fourthly some folks say the place is dirty etc. well i visited about ten years ago and to be honest some of the rearing pens were pretty nasty and stank of ammonia from the piss, but i went back about two years ago and the place was a hundred times better. apparently his daughter does a lot of the work there now and has made a big difference. for example she said they dont put down the spare males anymore, they just keep running them on. they dont have so many spare cos they are breeding more to order instead of just churning them out from every stud dog.apparently alex pups are doing well so they are breeding more from him for example

 

sorry went into a bit of a ramble didnt i! and anyway, a certain member on here says that hancock should stop using collies and use gsd and malemutes instead cos they can do everything......
