Apparently "legal tender" doesn't come into it apart from dealings between financial institutions. There is no risk involved for the shopkeeper or whoever because the Bank of Scotland deposits monies with the Bank of England to cover their "Currency". In all Shop/pub etc transactions the method of payment is by whatever means are agrred between the two parties. So next time you go out for a pint you could offer the barman a camel, 3 crickly bottom groats or your mother-in-law & so long as the barman is willing to accept then you have paid what it is you owe.
