Didnt know that... Time will tell, my cuckoo marans I hatched out last year have all come into lay now. Im getting fairly dark, spotted eggs, nothing like some of the almost black ones Ive seen. If you cant find what you want K, I`ll be running my incubator for a good part of the year now as of 18 days ago, so if you want me to hatch anything in particular, give us a shout.

The previous marrans I had were good layers for the first two years but were hit and miss after that .......

if your paying for them then it can be an expensive hobby.

 

it will probally cost you between 22 - 30 quid for a legbar maybe more.

 

you could buy three hybrid layers for that price. what i find is that if i buy three hybrids from the same hatch they all go off the lay at the same time anyway.

 

they don't look as pretty but they are more cost effective because they lay more and eat less food

theres some on bird trader for £20 if you go to a dealer it wiil be more.

 

hybreeds like warren, amber link lay an egg every day for a year in the right conditions. others breeds like rhode island red lay around 240 or a maran lays around 200 in the same amount of time.

 

if you pick up a warren it's just skin and bone were as a sussex are quite chunky( a daul purpose bird). little of your feed goes into meat only eggs.

 

those birds are purpose bred by an industry that is worth millions of course they have been bred to lay more and eat less.

warrens will not eat any considerable amount less that a cream leagbar. that was my inital point, i didnt mention a sussex, as you were alluding to legbars above. i know how the hybrid industry works, but warrens will eat no less, but your light weight leghorn based birds will

I have just put a dozen legbars in my incubator I have caught a cock and two hen pheasants in the last couple of days so going to breed them as well I gave a white kelso cock and two hens to one of the local travellers who has took up residence I a log cabin a couple of miles away the cock was fighting with all my English game cocks I have had 3 dead this week
