Lurcher Or Terrier For First Dog?

Just thinking about what type of dog would suit me best. I go ratting,lamping and ferreting. Any help guys?

Where are you? What kinda land do you hunt, what do you want to hunt? What kinda set up at home have you got/got space for? Is it your first dog - first x collie x grey might not be best suited, maybe beddy x whippet might be better? Lots of factors!!! If you want to do lots of ferreting a saluki x might not be a good one but if you have big land and 'what not' this x might be for you!!! All the best. Colin.

I have a fair bit of land (couple of acres local) i have a big house and a big garden

Whippet/beddy cross Whippet, first cross beddy whippet might be a bit slow for lamping, 3/4 would imo suit you better, i do the same type of work that your wanting to do, thats why i,v got one Harry, , atb, buster.

I wouldn't be looking at specific breeds tbh, just look for a well bred lurcher thats being used for what you want.

An average height dog will do all you need, about 23. Make sure you know what the parents are up to. There were some half decent ones for sale in Liverpool a week or so ago. They would suit you fine...

I cant disagree with anything thats been said on this thred, but if i were intending to do a fair bit of ratting with a small lurcher i,d like a dash of terrier blood in the mix, thats why i,d lean towards a beddy cross, having said that, some of the best ratting dogs i,v seen were rag whippets, but they need a bit of room to do their stuff, atb with what ever you choose, buster.

You won't go wrong with a beddy whippet. As said above I would go for the 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy.

 

I've got a 3/4 grey 1/4 beddy here and he lives to graft. 110% every time we are out.
