After 2 l200s and a new 3.2 shogun warrior I bought a secondhand freelander 2 auto last october with 35k on clock fsh.

Since then Ive never given any car Ive owned as much stick and Ive got to say even with standard boots its got me everywhere this winter with all my decoying gear in the boot easily and two guns with the seats layed down.

Ive driven it on the fields and lanes around my shoots through some proper mud had it bottomed out in the tractor ruts but its always got me out of trouble when Ive needed it most, and it gets the kids to school when the teachers cant make it ( never good)

And on the road its fast the auto box is brilliant it changes when you want and its as smooth as most audis Ive been in, but soaks up the pot holes.

I think it eclipses the mitsubishis Ive owned for years in terms of ride quality speed and refinement on road, also offroad ability is better than the l200 pickup although I had the new shape swb shogun warrior and that was pretty good offroad about the same as the landrover to be honest..

Ive always wanted a new disco or a range but not anymore I would have another one of the these in a heartbeat definately the best shooting bus/family car Ive had,

If your thinking of buying one do it you wont regret it and get the auto its brilliant.

Anyone else got one?

Thought i'd "bump" this as in the near future i'm considering either a quad left at my main permission and keep my car, or go for a medium sized diesel 4x4 thats a good compromise between off and on road. I've looked at alsorts. Favourite was a hair dressers Suzuki Grand Vitara lwb with the 2.0lt dt peugeot engine. But i recently went out in a Freelander 2, albeit only on the road. But it seemed quite refined and a good ride.

Decisions decisions............ :hmm:

Funny that mate I had the same dilemma I was thinking about a quad or another 4x4, I was sceptical with the "gaylander" reputation and what not but forget that if that means its no good off road that's not the case, its designed for it not like half of these Chelsea tractors, but it will drive well on the road too.

I definitely made the right decision.

Quad wouldn't get me anywhere this hasn't to be honest, I had read they are good off road but I cant believe the crap its got me through this winter, as the tractors have mashed up the fields and tracks good and proper especially in the gate holes on my shoot but up to now I haven't had to phone anyone for a tow, and I haven't put mud tyres on it yet but I will next winter.

But its made a good account of itself on Goodyear road tyres, I can only think it will be all the 4x4 I will ever need with some general grabbers fitted, and what defender comes in auto with comfy seats and will sit at 90 on the motorway all day at 3000rpm and goes round corners like a hot hatch? it is like a defender that actually does roads too as far as Im concerned.

The Freelander 2 is actually quite alright, it hasn't been around long enough for tests on how hard waring the chassis is and things for off road. The Freelander 1 was awful, the body was rustproof but the running gear was bad. Many head gasket problems with the petrols

And by the way the RR Evoque is built on the same base as the Freelander 2, so that would be more likely to take the Chelsea tractor spot in my opinion

The Freelander is now what the discovery was back in '89 a family 4x4 that is also quite affordable now the discovery is on tech par with the Range Rover
