craigymac 11 Posted March 11, 2013 Report Share Posted March 11, 2013 new to terrier work got a patt x lakie whats a good age to start him on rats? he is nearly 7 month old at the min been using him when out with ferrets woeking good there and showing that he is wanting to go to ground but been holding him back. so thought id try him on the rats now iv stopped ferreting. keith j 1,088 Posted March 11, 2013 Report Share Posted March 11, 2013 now's a good time bud assuming he has a full mouth[adult teeth] just take him to some where where rats are feeding out ,so the dog can have a chance,as rats sometimes feed a few yards away from there holes ect,i find lamping rats is best for this,at least it'l give you pup a chance to make some ground on the feeding rats,it will only be a mater of time before he'll make a kill,failing that try ferreting them ,smoking them has some good results too.good luck with your young dog and happy hunting,keith j.
